Cattedrale Di Otranto, Otranto
(4.7/5 based on 1,400+ reviews on the web)
is most famous for the 12th-century mosaic that covers the floor of the nave, sanctuary and apse. Within the tiles, you'll recognize scenes from the Old Testament and the tree of life. The cathedral, consecrated almost 1,000 years ago, was built on the remains of a Messapian village, a Roman house, and an early Christian church. Admire the mixture of architectural styles, including Byzantine, early Christian, and Romanesque elements. In the south aisle, look for the Chapel of the Martyrs, which displays relics of those who died in the Ottoman siege of the church in 1480. • Is a necessary step for you visit otranto. Not only for tourism, or religious. You can't see the chapel dedicated to Saint martyrs because there is written the history of this city. Not to mention the mosaic floor; and the crypt ... a hidden gem. A foresight ... don't come in with beach clothes. Respect the sacredness of the place and stop to pray and/or reflect on what it means to be a Christian today watching those 800 heroes.

  • Main place of worship in the city dating from the middle of the year 1000 was built on the ruins of an ancient early Christian Temple. Presents a blend of various styles, with predominance of Romanesque. When there was the invasion of the Turks in 1480 that I mentioned in the review on the sanctuary the Minerva Hill, the scene of the martyrdom of the 800 martyrs beheaded for not having converted to Islam, the Cathedral witnessed a great carnage on the part of the invaders and during their occupation converted into a mosque. The Interior offers to view the classic three naves, but the Visual impact is definitely from the mosaic (the biggest in Europe) representing as main theme the tree of life through which discusses the major performances of the old testament from the original sin with the expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise. of great impact even in the right aisle is the chapel of the martyrs which houses the remains of 800 martyrs decapitated on the Hill of Minerva, behind the altar is preserved the stone on which were decapitations. You can't miss, magical and enchanting, is the visit to the crypt below the Cathedral is accessed by two ladders placed in the aisles. 48 sections and over 70 columns, but those elements none same! Ancient frescoes are also survivors dating from the middle ages. A must for lovers of history and to the faithful, I recommend a guided tour or read in advance any particular historical and architectural sites are plenty.

  • In the ancient village of salento Otranto is surely one of the most beautiful things to see.
Impossible not to appreciate the beauty of the mosaic in the Cathedral of Santa maria Annunziata that covers the entire floor. The huge mosaic is basically a carpet of colored stones built between 1163 and 1165. The mosaic is so large and rich in figures is like an encyclopedia of weather images and medieval culture. The middle part depicts the tree of life.

  • For those coming in Salento this architectural gem is worth a visit. The mosaic of Pantaleone and the canopy can be considered some of the most iconic symbols of Salento.
