Cattedrale Di Otranto, Otranto

(4.7/5 based on 1,400+ reviews on the web)
Cattedrale Di Otranto is most famous for the 12th-century mosaic that covers the floor of the nave, sanctuary and apse. Within the tiles, you'll recognize scenes from the Old Testament and the tree of life. The cathedral, consecrated almost 1,000 years ago, was built on the remains of a Messapian village, a Roman house, and an early Christian church. Admire the mixture of architectural styles, including Byzantine, early Christian, and Romanesque elements. In the south aisle, look for the Chapel of the Martyrs, which displays relics of those who died in the Ottoman siege of the church in 1480. • Nice clear town. Beautiful sea views. A bit touristy, but atmospheric.

  • This Cathedral is a unique jewel. No because of its façade and its architecture. Because of a set of mosaics on the ground of more than 1000 m 2 dating from the 12th century, which includes both medieval legends like King Arthur as the biblical myths like Abel and Cain. It is a marvel and is even more moving that it is probably one of the rare pieces of this type has survived up to us. Not to be missed under any circumstances.

  • Enjoyed the Cathedral first for its unique mosaic floor; second for the story of the martyrs who were said to be beheaded for not converting; and finally, for the beautiful crypt below.  more »
