Cathedral of Ostuni, Ostuni

Seated atop the highest hill in the city, and dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, Cathedral of Ostuni is a late Gothic-style cathedral, begun in 1435 and completed some 60 years later. Walk through the narrow cobbled streets of the whitewashed old town and up the hill to the imposing basilica. Explore the interior, which was rebuilt in the 18th century in the Latin-cross plan, and is composed of three naves, supported by two rows of supporting columns. The church contains several paintings depicting the life of Jesus, also from the 1700s. Cathedral of Ostuni is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Ostuni Edition.

  • This Cathedral, like many beauties of Ostuni, speaks for itself. Even seen at night, in the cold and the ancient, wonderful sensations ... arouses geto Indeed, I must say that it is appreciated more in the silence of a winter evening in racket Ostuni travel in the summer.

  • We were delighted by the splendor simplistic of SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA Cathedral. Each inlay in the façade, in the rosette, in bleachers tells the beauty, as if time stood still. The altars and the frescoes in the nave and side, inside the Cathedral, are stunning.

  • Lots of marble, clean and bright in the Gothic style
  • Must see in the city
  • Nice!!!
  • The Cathedral of Ostuni, placed at the top of the highest hill of the city and dedicated to our Lady of the assumption, was begun in 1435 and completed between 1470 and 1495. StrutturaModifica has a feature late Gothic façade, tripartite with pilasters. The central part ends with a pediment formed by two inflected arches, the wings with two half-lunette; gable and bezels have a crowning of serrated profile view on shelves carved arches, which extends the hips and around the transept. The façade is opened by three elegant portals arches (the Lunette that mediate a bas-relief depicts the Virgin and child in glory) surmounted each a rose window, the central one, considerably larger, has 24 spokes. Other rosettes are in the heads of the transept. The Interior has a Latin cross with three naves on columns, was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, with flat ceiling painting and Baroque chapels (at the entrance, it remains a pillar of primitive build). At the end of the left aisle is placed a wooden altar of 1734 with busts of Saints Oronzo, Blaise and Augustine. In the apse there is a richly carved Walnut wood Choir (17th century). In the right aisle the tomb of Bishop (1720); the last chapel there was a Madonna with child and Saints by Jacopo Palma il Giovane (stolen). The Capitular archives has over 200 scrolls from 1137. From 1986 's Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Brindisi-Ostuni. In 2011 was awarded the title of minor basilica. Source Wikipedia

  • You cannot fail to notice its magnificence in the highest part of the town of Ostuni. The first one that stands out is the rose window carved which is located above the front door. In the church there is a nice lady who politely asks a symbolic gesture for the care of the Church, fully justified because it held really well. Inside there are Baroque décor, but you can see paintings and frescoes on the walls. Not to be missed. During the summer (especially in the period of the feast of Saint Oronzo falling at the end of August) is open until midnight.
