Cathedral of Ostuni, Ostuni

(4/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Seated atop the highest hill in the city, and dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, Cathedral of Ostuni is a late Gothic-style cathedral, begun in 1435 and completed some 60 years later. Walk through the narrow cobbled streets of the whitewashed old town and up the hill to the imposing basilica. Explore the interior, which was rebuilt in the 18th century in the Latin-cross plan, and is composed of three naves, supported by two rows of supporting columns. The church contains several paintings depicting the life of Jesus, also from the 1700s. Make Cathedral of Ostuni a part of your Ostuni vacation plans using our Ostuni trip builder.

  • Located in the beautiful historical centre of Ostuni. Near come literally '' seized '' from arzilla Mr. that makes getting in and forces you to a substantial offer for the Church says ... it will be all right? In any case, makes you appreciate the beauty of it. Those responsible should take action!

  • If you're used to seeing the traditional churches or cathedrals of major cities, you will be fascinated by what I your eyes can see. Free entry, the site is located within the town. Within easy walking distance. Recommended for architects, churches and photography.

  • The Church, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, national monument snce 1902, begun to build while he was Bishop Nicholas Harpoon (1437-70), namesake of the old Italian-Swiss Athlete represented me at the feet of the Virgin in the Lunette of the main entrance, was not yet completed in 1495 and it was probably only in the first two decades of the next century. Its façade looks copied from that of the Church of Santa Maria Jemal of Milan had been buried her husband of Isabella of Aragon who was Duchess of Bari and Ostuni and Lady in the Palace which is now Episcopalian, stayed for some time almost banished. You may think that she give the model of the façade or, at the very least, the curvilinear gable then repeated in the Church of Mottola.

  • Splendida e caratteristica
  • I honestly did not expect such a church in a village as Ostuni. Already the façade suggests something because, with its sinuous curves, differs from the classical Church. Very nice rosette carved above the entrance door. To visit the church you must pay a symbolic offering that amounts to a measly euros. The Interior of the Church, unusually, is not of Baroque decorations and friezes but paintings, frescoes and decorated walls. Very nice on the ceiling of the main nave and the transept.

  • You can't not notice coming to town: dominates the upper part with his particular color compared to White City. Joints after an uphill on via Cathedral, the very first thing that strikes the eye is the beautiful rose window. The Interior has a richly decorated ceiling, with some scenes from the New Testament, more of the lives of the Saints to whom is dedicated the Cathedral. Worth paying the small price of the ticket to visit

  • The Cathedral is worth restoration that carry it to its former glory. The ceiling painting is surprising as well as remnants of the 14th-century frescoes. Very interesting the altar in the left transept with the patron saints as well as opposite the façade the beautiful statue of Christ. True value of the Cathedral exterior decoration, the madonna enthroned in the Lunette of the main door to St John the Baptist carved in the side face.

  • A fantastic and charming cathedral. In the reviews below, many a year ago claim to have paid the entrance (which is not very pretty) definitely one year things have changed, in fact I walked in for free.
