Torre del Moro, Orvieto

4.5
Climb the 236 steps and treat yourself to an amazing view over Orvieto and the surrounding landscape from the top of Torre del Moro, one of the city's most imposing structures. The 47 m (154 ft) tower, now the symbol of the city, was originally built in the 13th century and first belonged to the pope before it became the property of the city. Over the centuries it has served various purposes, from wartime observation platform to the city's main water tank. Today, its clock and bells tell the time. If you don't feel like climbing all the way up, there is a lift that takes you halfway up the tower, leaving you with only 100 steps to the top. • Since the tower was previously owned by the Pope, he was called "Torre del Papa". Once in the year 1515 47-meter Tower took the Municipality its name was changed to the unusual "Tower of the Moor". "Moor", probably lived in the adjacent Palace Gualterio. Most likely, nothing to do with the Moors, he had just had darker skin than others. His nickname and the name of the tower. You can climb the Tower in less than 3 euros. Downright nonsense in comparison with competing proposals in Italy. We consistently do all more or less important cities, but due to lack of time to train for Siena had to break tradition. Orvieto was "neobozrjonnym".
