San Giulio Island, Orta San Giulio
(4.3/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
The isolated beauty of San Giulio Island made the island an attractive spot for monastic orders to build their sanctuary. The centerpiece, a 12th-century basilica, stands as an icon to the mainland village and is open to the public. Next to the basilica, a 19th-century seminary functions as a Benedictine monastery. Parts of this building are closed to the public. Archaeological findings on the island date back to the fifth century, when a small chapel was erected to honor evangelizer Saint Julius. This notable saint spent his last days on the island, but he wasn't the only known figure associated with it. William of Volpiano, or St. William of Dijon, was born here. • Food was fine and the River from Piazza Motta costs 4.5 euros in two pages/os (November 2016), and the island itself is suitable for 15 min walk. A lot of interesting kadrow, something for lovers of photography.

  • It is definitely a place to see, mystical atmosphere and plenty of tranquility, peace and silence. Having said that I cannot but add that the islet is more beautiful to look at from the coast than inside ... beyond the Romanesque basilica, not bad but nothing exceptional, there is little else to see and turns all in half an hour. In short, almost deserves more on short boat trip with views of the Lake ...

  • The many speedboats that depart from the main square of Orta San Giulio Island reach in a few minutes at a cost of a few euros round trip. The island has at its core a convent and a very beautiful basilica (closed on Monday morning) while all around there are private houses, restaurants and a beautiful road that allows you to quickly make the circumnavigation of the island. The atmosphere is beautiful, a mix between peace mystique and romance. It's almost a summary to the nth degree to this whole area. Highly recommended.
