San Giulio Island, Orta San Giulio

(4.3/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
The isolated beauty of San Giulio Island made the island an attractive spot for monastic orders to build their sanctuary. The centerpiece, a 12th-century basilica, stands as an icon to the mainland village and is open to the public. Next to the basilica, a 19th-century seminary functions as a Benedictine monastery. Parts of this building are closed to the public. Archaeological findings on the island date back to the fifth century, when a small chapel was erected to honor evangelizer Saint Julius. This notable saint spent his last days on the island, but he wasn't the only known figure associated with it. William of Volpiano, or St. William of Dijon, was born here. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Orta San Giulio holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the San Giulio Island and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Both Orta San Giulio island that are very romantic medieval villages; you arrive in 5 minutes by boat from the main square. The atmosphere on the island is very special and gives the impression of living in a bygone era. Well worth exploring, perhaps avoiding the peak times of the weekend visits

  • We crossed by boat, which are very efficient and we took a walk around the island, very beautiful, take lots of Pictures. Unfortunately, the Sam Giulio encerrrada, was not supposed to happen!

  • So he called this place the Cardinal, Bishop of Novara. Arrive by boat, the fog suddenly encounter you, surrounds you. The boat goes secure, it's cold in the whiteness you lose orientation, but shortly after you see the Isle, as sorts by waters, bright. Docking, the way of "silence" and that silence! There is none! We live a couple of families, there are no tourists. There lives a community of cloistered nuns, dedicated to the restoration of antique fabrics. A lovely place that calms the soul and spirit on a cold winter day.
