San Giulio Island, Orta San Giulio
(4.3/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
The isolated beauty of San Giulio Island made the island an attractive spot for monastic orders to build their sanctuary. The centerpiece, a 12th-century basilica, stands as an icon to the mainland village and is open to the public. Next to the basilica, a 19th-century seminary functions as a Benedictine monastery. Parts of this building are closed to the public. Archaeological findings on the island date back to the fifth century, when a small chapel was erected to honor evangelizer Saint Julius. This notable saint spent his last days on the island, but he wasn't the only known figure associated with it. William of Volpiano, or St. William of Dijon, was born here. • These are the feelings evoked by the small island on which stands a Benedictine monastery. The Basilica is dominated by the impressive Bell Tower, it's definitely worth visiting. Richly decorated with symbolic and iconographic frescoes in Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque houses in the crypt the mortal remains of Saint Giulio. Venture out to the paths that surround the basilica is surreal: multilingual written invite to silence and meditation. Too bad that during my visit, the island was crowded and anything but silent. "The tip": discover the legend of the birth of the island, which tells of how San Giulio drove the monsters, laying his cloak and creating this mystical place ...

  • Already from Orta country, piazza Motta, since you are on the boat to get it is clear that what you are about to reach is a special place ... An island with a unique energy, spiritual, not only for those who believe ... it feels a bit like spouses coming to the wedding, or friends invited to a special celebration ... the path of silence, the small restaurant on the island, the convent, the Church, and especially the extraordinary energy that emanates from this place, will give you a special trip that will be even richer when you turn into memory. To come back from time to time ... In the small, the wonder!!!

  • Located in the middle of Lake orta, is a delight for the senses. Little known and very visited by Italians. It is worth visiting it, as well as the shores of Lake Orta.
