Sicily Rome American Cemetery and Memorial, Nettuno

4.9
The Sicily–Rome American Cemetery and Memorial is a cemetery in Italy for American military personnel who were killed in World War II.
Established in Nettuno, Lazio, as a temporary wartime cemetery on 24 January 1944, two days after the landing at Anzio and Nettuno codenamed Operation Shingle the site covers 77acre, rising in a gentle slope from a broad pool with an island and cenotaph flanked by groups of Italian cypress trees. Beyond the pool is the immense field of headstones of 7,861 of American military war dead, arranged in gentle arcs on broad green lawns beneath rows of Roman pines. The majority of these men died in the liberation of Sicily, codenamed Operation Husky (10 July to 17 August 1943); in the landings in the Salerno Area, codenamed Operation Avalanche (9 September 1943) and the heavy fighting northward; in the landings, codenamed Operation Shingle, at Anzio and Nettuno and expansion of the beachhead (22 January 1944 to May 1944); and in air and naval support in the regions.
A wide central mall leads to the memorial, rich in works of art and architecture, expressing America's remembrance of the dead. It consists of a chapel to the south, a peristyle, and a map room to the north. On the white marble walls of the chapel are engraved the names of 3,095 of the missing. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. The map room contains a bronze relief map and four fresco maps depicting the military operations in Sicily and Italy. At each end of the memorial are ornamental Italian gardens.

  • Really beautiful experience. Place kept to perfection, never seen anything like it! Monuments and structures that leave you breathless. Milestone if you are in the area

  • A place to visit, to understand and not forget the horrors of the Second World War and how many young people have died. Thousands of crosses in a beautiful park. A quiet place 50 km from Rome.

  • Not to forget, do not forget. A place that takes you intimately, the many white crosses seem to be part of a painting, instead they are a historical reality 'button'. A small but well-curated museum welcomes you and guides you on your visit and at the same time supports the relatives of fallen soldiers, mostly Americans and beyond, in their requests and research.

  • A fitting tribute to all the service personnel that lost their lives in the Second World War. Maintained beautifully, with ground staff continually tending to the gardens. Well worth visiting to admire this location. Respect to all the fallen. Peace.
  • Beautiful place to visit, highly recommend. Easy to get here via train from Rome.
  • Visited on 4th July 2018. Impossible to find the right words to describe this beautiful but poignant place. A credit to those who lay there and those who tend this remarkable place.
  • Astonishing, magnificent, beautiful, serene. Projects the utmost respect, admiration, and gratitude to our fallen heroes. So thankful to see the impressive resting place of my lost brother-in-law.
  • Home of peace and grief. Thanks those brave men who sacrfified their lives for free Europe.
