Vesuvio, Naples

(4/5 based on 5,000+ reviews on the web)
The only active volcano on the European mainland, Vesuvio is best known for its dramatic eruption in 79 CE, which led to the destruction of ancient cities Herculaneum and Pompeii. The volcano is now the centerpiece of a national park, established in 1995 to prevent further development in the area. The summit of the volcano is open to visitors, with a network of well-maintained paths around the mountain. An access road can get you to about 200 m (660 ft) from the summit (measured vertically), but after that access is on foot only. A spiral walkway leads up the final section of the climb, from the road to the rim of the crater. On a sunny day, you'll have sweeping views of the surrounding area, stretching all the way to the Bay of Naples. Make Vesuvio a centerpiece of your Naples vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Naples travel itinerary maker.

  • Wonderful feeling: standing on the crater of a volcano, its eruption claimed not one city. Captures the spirit ... Been here with a guide, and believe me, it's worth it! Ascent to one of the most dangerous volcanoes under interesting stories of far-distant past if transfer you in those times and see the whole story. And a little tip: come to Vesuvius in June, on its slopes starts to blossom roads and its aroma fills the air around! P.s. be careful, cashier is half way, otherwise you run the risk of coming back)
