At the entrance to this Church (tralaltro singular, because the main is in a secluded courtyard, but at 99% you will enter from the side via a staircase overlooking piazza Spaccanapoli and a door flanked to the left, entering, a medieval) you will maybe even disgusted by the tenacious omnipresent Baroque vein which contaminates, in this case, a huge, airy Church that might look somewhat Gothic but he finds himself suffering the overabundance of swirls and unattractive. Don't be fooled and explore it piece by piece, especially the right side (on your left as you enter the square, confusing mysteries of Naples!), where, near the main entrance, an entire medieval frescoes of Giotto Chapel preserves reminiscence, while later another, hosting a crucifix from the singular history, opens to a wild Baroque decoration this time very good. And still other treasures, medieval and 17th century, mingle in this strange church without thread that is a true compendium of centuries. And hatched from where you entered, do not fail to admire the square from the top of the staircase and to smile at the two and a half millennia of history that will parade in front of.

Towards the end of our 5 night stay I was determined to "check" some churches off my list. San Domenico Maggiore did NOT disappoint and we didn't have to fight crowds. Beautiful interior.  more »

Its definitely worth exploring as far as the interior spaces. Shines particularly ancient and refined décor and art! Shame about the external environment: there were several homeless people in front of the entrance, and some rovistatrice in adjacent dustbins. This unfortunately damages the image of the structure. I find it particularly annoying Mrs. gated, chasing you for offering to leave the trash. I had already put my share, but going out I resorted to let me put more coins (I hope you remember my pass, took place but not too long before) but overall worth it!

No fuss, decent food. Nice spot in the historic area.

Beautiful basilica with two facades: one facing the piazza and the main facade reached via a courtyard at the opposite side of the church. Impressive works of art inside, including a chapel filled with spectacular frescoes by Pietro Cavallini (early 14th cent.).

Worth a look, but no photos are permitted within the building. There are ruins beneath to visit as well.

Where to stay in Naples

Naples' lodging options include everything from turn-of-the-century historical mansions to hip boutique hotels. For a five-star experience in the heart of town, book a centrally located luxury hotel. Less expensive but just as comfortable, traditional inns just outside the central area offer peaceful comfort, private parking, and private outdoor space ideal for quiet dinners and small parties. If you are looking for a less urban experience and prefer to stay in a leafy neighborhood, consider the city's residential suburbs.
