Pio Monte della Misericordia, Naples

Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web
Famous for its collection of artwork, Pio Monte della Misericordia houses a museum, library, and art gallery. The 17th-century church features white marble halls and ornate decoration. The exposed altar showcases perhaps the church's most famed piece, Caravaggio's "Seven Acts of Mercy." The side chapels include more paintings from Caravaggio, along with the works by Santafede, Giordana, and D'Onofrio. Adjacent to the museum is a picture gallery filled with more art, refreshingly non-museum in presentation. Upstairs, a small exhibit draws parallels between the works in the chapel and those in the gallery. • Lovely Caravaggio which can be admired in the chapel. A truly spectacular picture not to be missed. Included in the entrance price there is also a visit to the gallery where you can admire paintings of minor authors. Audio guide included in the price which remains, in my opinion, a bit excessive (7 €).

  • Worth the visit to know more about Caravagio the Painter. So few explanations in English.
  • The austere building, preceded by a portico of piperno, belongs to the institution founded in 1602, in the controriformato climate, on the initiative of seven nobles. Still happens today. Every Friday morning. The Church has its own hub in the large painting of the main altar, painted by Caravaggio during his first stay in Naples.
