Duomo di Napoli, Naples
(4.4/5 based on 1,400+ reviews on the web)
Completed in the 14th century, Duomo di Napoli was built on the foundation of two palaeo-Christian basilicas, traces of which can still be seen today. When you visit this Catholic cathedral, be sure to look for the fourth-century mosaics. The grand Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro contains famous frescoes by Domenichino and a reliquary by 14th-century French masters. Those of a squeamish disposition should skip the caskets of human bones. The cathedral operates a strictly modest dress code. • Symbol of the Catholic tradition. Admission is free, I did not like the fact of being thrown out at 13.30 the Cathedral has the opening, closes at 13.30 and reopens at 14.30, also another annoying thing is that the Cathedral opens at 14.30, the chapel at 15.30 if you want an icon is available from 16.00. The Cathedral has a splendid coffered wooden ceiling with a majestic altar, beautiful eighteenth-century works of Giordano. The Cathedral also houses the West's oldest Baptistry in the basilica of San Remy which is the ancient Church Cathedral. Obviously in the Cathedral is the Royal Chapel of the treasure of San Gennaro. This chapel was built by the Neapolitans to sign of devotion to the Saint, and is not owned by the curia but

  • We refugees in for a shower and we just loved it. Very lush and well maintained. Even for the unbelievers a ride to the chapel of San Gennaro you must do

  • The Cathedral of Naples is a place worth visiting! Don't miss the trove of San Gennaro in the tree right outside the entrance of the Cathedral!
