  • Already one of the largest and richest monasteries of the city, the majestic building has recently regained vitality thanks to commendable Touring Club volunteers who, in addition to the opening of the place, are valuable stewards of information about the history of the monument. The Interior impresses with its size and magnificence of its ceiling-one of the most beautiful of Naples-superbly frescoed by Francesco De Mura. To see the chapel Sanseverino where are the beautiful tombs of the three brothers Sanseverino killed his uncle to inheritance matters and the lavish vestry.

  • Extraordinary interior with an interesting array of artworks and sculpture, including the Sanseverino Chapel by Giovanni da Nola.
  • The first settlements of the Church of San Severino are dating from the late 9th century when, by order of Bishop Athanasius II, founded a monastery with 15 monks who would follow the rule of St Benedict. The monastery was founded in the 10th century by Benedictine monks who left the old monastery, located on the Hill of Pizzofalcone, because they feared the incursions of the Saracens. The Benedictines carried the relics of San Severino and the new monastery moved the relics of San Sossio, companion of martyrdom of Saint Januarius, who had been found among the ruins of the castle of Miseno. In 1643 the Church of San Severino was defined in a text by Julius Caesar Capaccio "the finest ecclesia who was the dicta cited". The Church was enriched and enlarged over time: the Interior, with a Latin cross plan, with a single nave and sides houses seven beautiful chapels. Beautiful Walnut choir stalls, designed in 1560 by Welcome Tortelli from Brescia, and ended in 1573. In 1561 it was erected the dome with its frescoes by Sigismondo Coccapani Flemish, while the altar and the balustrade of the presbytery is the 1640 and of Cosimo Fanzago. In 1783 the altar underwent changes to opera by Giacomo Mazzotti. The many and extremely valuable artworks in the building range from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A corridor of the 15th century, from the sacristy entrance leads to the lower church Renaissance edited by g. f. Mormando which are numerous tombs of ' 500. The adjoining Monastery from 1835 is the seat of the State Archives of Naples.
