Catacombe di San Gennaro, Naples
Categories: Cemeteries, Ruins, Tourist Spots
With the tombs of saints and commoners dating from the second century, Catacombe di San Gennaro is one of Naples' most important Christian site. As you walk the hallways of the catacombs, you'll view the resting places of famous Neapolitan figures, including St. Januarius (San Gennaro), who was interred in the fifth century. Explore the rooms and niches carved out of the solid stone. Admire frescoes, mosaics, and portraits--some nearly 2,000 years old. Notice the differences between the tombs of the different social classes, ranging from simple stone shelves to dedicated areas within the grand basilica. You can book a guided tour online. Our Naples family vacation planner makes visiting Catacombe di San Gennaro and other Naples attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

The expert guidance and good organization made this visit very enjoyable. In the end, a walk of 20 minutes in the neighborhood took me to the National Archaeological Museum, as well as the catacombs of San Gaudisio, that I couldn't go because it was now late afternoon, but which are included in the same ticket, valid for one year after the first visit. I repeat, the social cooperative Paranza, with his organization, is doing a great job. I highly recommend a visit.show original
Cool, but rather short tour. All bones have been moved, but still nice to look at and get some history
Magic place with great history. Guides tours every hour for 45 minutes each. Also a possibility to escape summer heat underground. Free parking outside.
Great site! English speaking tour guide. Had no problem with parking on-site (free). Take your camera but no flash allowed. If you know how to edit your photos, then that will be no problem. I got some great photos that looked pitch black, but when I adjusted the lighting they came out very nice.
A must to see in Naples. Wide paleochristian site, unique in Italy, very different from the roman ones
Very interesting to see and hear the history of these catacombs and if you know this is set up to give local youth steady work I strongly recommend it you will not be disappointed!
