Castel Nuovo - Maschio Angioino, Naples

3.8
Castel Nuovo - Maschio Angioino is a medieval castle near the sea with iconic architecture. Many visitors claim the outside view is the most impressive, so be sure to stop for photos. Once inside, you can find a 15th-century bronze door with a cannonball embedded in it, historical artwork, and other antiquities. Also look for the glass-floored room that looks down into the catacombs, which house some unearthed skeletons. • My favorite castle in Naples. Look at the doors at the gate with the scenes of the war between Aragonese and Angevin pretenders. On the both sides of the gate are excellent bas-relieves with Italian men-at-arms of XV century. In the church you are going to find XIV century frescoes. You have to buy a ticket to get in. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light.
  • Impressive castle-museum complex with many interesting components, however, they are not all always accessible and the civic museum suffers from poor lighting design (like many Italian museums) which makes it difficult to fully enjoy all the exhibited artworks.
  • Castel Nuovo is probably the most fascinating medieval building among the seven fortresses built during the centuries. The tickets is a bit expensive (€6), and the setting-up may not be exactly "wow" but it is really worthwhile
  • What can I say. Naples is all beautiful. New Castle, or Maschio Angioino, is a historian of medieval and Renaissance Castle, and one of the symbols of the city of Naples. The Castle overlooks the scenic Town Hall square and is home to the Società napoletana di storia patria and Committee of Naples Italian Istituto per la storia del Risorgimento, hosted at the premises of the SNSP. Overall it is the Civic Museum.

  • Museum obscene, I don't think I've ever seen a museum so ugly. Paintings of low-level, poorly-lit path unclear darkest colors in salt (do not even understand where to go) not worth the ticket €6. Donot entry (because they do not accept even ATMs, in 2017!). The castle is splendid but sounds great even just from the outside without throwing money as well. Avoid it!
