  • The shrine, located in a prominent position on the coast and from which you can enjoy beautiful views, was born out of an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. A popular legend has it that he was consecrated by the same St. Peter, believing the visit to the first step to enter paradise; always deep and ancient devotion (the Crusaders prayed near Madonna before embarking to the Holy Land) the shrine was destroyed five times from the devastating force of the Turks and Saracens but rebuilt along more or less the same walls until the 18th century the present building. Inside the church there is a fragment of the original painting of the Madonna and child that was burnt by Algerian pirates and now tours, revised and completed, is placed on the Western Wall of the transept and seeing the canvas of San Francesco da Paola and the high altar, in front of the shrine, opens a majestic square and stands a tall column with a Corinthian capital surmounted by a stone cross that commemorates the Jubilee pilgrimage of 1900 and the passage of Saint Peter.
