  • Located in a very beautiful country boasting an artistic cultural structure dating back to 1078

  • It is one of the most important monuments of Basilicata. The Benedictine presence dates back to the 9th century, but the Abbey was erected in the second half of the eleventh century by the Norman family of Macabeo that endowed it with a remarkable heritage. Over the centuries the Benedictines were able to further beautify the Abbey and to consolidate and increase the already rich heritage. However in the late 18th century the Benedictine monks were forced to abandon the Abbey for the legal case challenged the property. We were able to visit only the first floor and the huge cellars, because the second is currently not accessible to the public for renovations. In the chapter (the room where they were decisions) are preserved the images of the founders of some monastic orders (carthusians, Cistercians, Knights of Malta, etc.). In the four corners of the arcades there are the frescoes of the Archangels Michael and Raphael, St Benedict and St Scholastica and behind them you can see the Abbey of Montescaglioso. Very interesting the two cloisters very close to each other.

  • A few kilometers from Matera, in the lovely town of Montescaglioso is definitely worth visiting this beautiful Abbey which, although not containing works of great value, is interesting not only for the structure itself, due to the presence of huge cellars (that the Benedictines were not ever Miss) dug in the Tuff. A pity they are unused, but are very well kept and outside there is a breathtaking view. The most valuable of the visit (well over an hour) was the whole description/story we received from great guide, the crazy Angel (among other things only for the two of us). His was an interesting illustration that touched on in the folk traditions of the area. There are no problems for visits (2 euros if I remember correctly), just call ahead or arrive during opening hours. Are most helpful. Free and easy parking.
