Benedectine Abbey Reviews
Alla scoperta di uno scorcio lucano tra i piu belli nella zona del Materano. Consiglio di prenotare una visita guidata, personale competente, molto diponibile e paziente con I più piccoli. Un luogo ch... more »Discovering Basilicata glimpse of the most beautiful in the area of Matera. To book a guided tour, competent staff, very helpful and patient with children. A place that conveys peace and shakes you to the harmony of the Interior facilities and attractions. It was a pleasant discovery, but 4 5 not because of pallini and Mother Church still closed for renovations. Who knows when it will be possible to rediscover it, we know the limits of our beautiful country. Only the tenacity of associations and cooperatives (through specific tenders) allowed to bring back to light the winery and the Nadh in basements. Not to be missed.
Non e' la prima abbazia che visito e ancora una volta vieni avvolta da un gran senso di pace. Sembra quasi di vederli i monaci che si recano alla scriptorium o in refettorio. All this especially if the visit come guided by extremely knowledgeable staff who accompanies you even in a recently recovered as the cellars.

Unfortunately the adjoining basilica is not open to the public, but will you repeat with the mother church which is about 2 metres away where you can enjoy four beautiful canvases of Caravaggio, Mattia Preti, known artist calavrese cavalier. The guide staff will take you to see even the cellars of the Abbey, opened recently, very impressive and cool, especially in summer. Within different environments that you will visit and will tell you about an interesting story and, to some extent, also touching to as certain circles have been used over time in favour of local populations.
What a lovely place! The best part is the agricultural museum with an excellent guide! She will give you the perfect picture of how the life used to look like in the past! Bellissimo posto! Specialmente il muse de l'arte contadina con la splendida guida che vi porterà in dietro nel passato! Un posto da visitare!!!
A few kilometers from the Sassi di Matera and the Ionian coast stands in an old town not yet completely abandoned, the magnificent Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel built by the Benedictines around the year 1000. Its strategic position dominates and controls much of the territory materano and tarantino, its two cloisters welcome tourists in a silence, and you don't seem inconsistent, deafening, his frescoes evoke a past of the culture in which it was reference to Pythagoras, Aristotle and great thinkers depicted in now strips the Benedictine library. A few meters from it because of their importance and their beauty the Church of Santa Maria in Platea, little gem with frescoes dating back to 1400, the former convent of the Poor Clares with dizzying ceilings, the mother church where are paintings by Mattia Preti , the main course, the scene of many events, including the appalling murder of Joseph Novello, during the occupation of the lands, and the Church of San Rocco in piazza Roma, which a local reporter called it proudly, in the years ' 50, "the city". Without forgetting, then, the Capuchin Convent, the pine forest, an oasis of peace, and the huge wild space called "la defense" with Mediterranean vegetation and vegetation rich in ancient perfumes.
The site visit was very interesting. The Guide drove us into the places for over an hour in a strict and precise chronological tale. Too bad it was not possible to access the Abbey closed at requests since time and probably for the next few years.
Definitely useful, why read the comments and watch the pictures of ordinary people helps us to really understand if the place or the area which we are informing can actually fit within our tastes.
Imposing structure, a must visit, perhaps with the help of the guides, who know how to have a blast from the past! Also you can visit places, which are usually closed to the public, such as Cellars or entirely frescoed library
