Walls of Monteriggioni, Monteriggioni

(4.4/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Walls of Monteriggioni is a fine example of a medieval walled town. Explore the village's central Piazza Roma and side streets to find hidden gardens and courtyards. Marvel at the 570 m (1,870 ft) of thick stone walls surrounding the town and the 14 towers punctuating the skyline. These were designed to protect the city from Florence's armies. Climb the barricades--nearly untouched since their construction in the early 13th century--for views of farmland and the city. Ask at the tourism center about guided tours of the city and the walls. • Monteriggioni I visited the historical part enclosed within its walls; walls feature towers, all along its path. Destination for many tourists, a large car park you will come to a large square that opens at the entrance of the walls, and can be visited easily in a couple of hours. The place has an information point, a museum that I have not visited, and two walkways over the high walls at either end of the village that has a finite length, i.e. do not run through the entire diameter of the walls. It is advisable to walk around the walls from outside the village amid the olive groves to enjoy a breathtaking view of the surroundings.

  • Charming Village with spectacular views from the top of the wall. My visit was in February so the most everything was closed for the season. Still worth a visit for the views.
  • We were one of these magic walls a few nights ago ... already approaching you can admire the walls with the effect of the lights is very very nice ... inside you feel catapulted into centuries of history, like walking into a movie set ... in my humble opinion a must ... a typical Tuscan hamlet of times gone by, as well as on the route of the via Francigena ...
