Walls of Monteriggioni, Monteriggioni
Categories: Architectural Buildings, Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Walls of Monteriggioni is a fine example of a medieval walled town. Explore the village's central Piazza Roma and side streets to find hidden gardens and courtyards. Marvel at the 570 m (1,870 ft) of thick stone walls surrounding the town and the 14 towers punctuating the skyline. These were designed to protect the city from Florence's armies. Climb the barricades--nearly untouched since their construction in the early 13th century--for views of farmland and the city. Ask at the tourism center about guided tours of the city and the walls. We parked the car and we ventured through the streets of this small village. Built as an outpost in protection and control of the historical Florentine rivals, stands on what was once an estate Lombard. Its location makes it strategically important since it dominates the valley below, today made the fields and swamp then reclaimed. The medieval climate is clearly tangible and you can make a visit from two sections of the defensive walls, through special walkways, needless to say, the show enjoyed at this height ... Paid parking at the foot of the Hill on which stands the fortress or at the foot of the walls. Five minute walk at worst. Beautiful park in our path which I highly recommend. To visit!show original

But when you are up there you lose sight of what's under your feet, you just enjoy the wonderful view that lies beyond the walls, the valley below and for many kilometres on the horizon.show original
