  • Dress and I was born in Reggio Emilia and had never visited the castle of Montecchio Emilia, perhaps because the monuments that are closer to home you tend to send them back because they are on our doorstep. But I happened to visit the castle of Montecchio, known to reggiani as Rocca, on a Sunday in January, precisely because it housed an exhibition and review for photographers, of which I am passionate. So I was able to visit the Castle, which lies West of the historical centre of Montecchio. It is characterized by an irregular quadrilateral, partly the result of repairs that were made over the centuries. The most ancient on the clock tower dates from the period of Matilda of Canossa, relating to the twelfth century. From the main hall, head down and on the right you will find a beautiful spiral staircase, which leads down to the dungeons (very interesting part of the burial ground) while out of door with several floors, until you come to one of the two towers: one can climb to the top of it! While get off don't miss a little door in wood through which you access what was one side of the walkway and two-cell-prisons: a scary claustrophobic size (there are carvings on the stone) and another has carvings on wood of the bed for prisoners and on shutter! Really a nice find, I recommend visiting it!

  • A small castle nicely restored, open hours (eye the cartel's last year), and well maintained. From the top you can enjoy a superb view of the area. Better if you address to local guides, well informed and well available. Inside there is a municipal library. Unfortunately not as well entertained the adjacent Park Garden and stone structures (chairs and tables), filled with bird droppings.

  • I loved visiting this castle. The place is perfect for a little trip of a few hours, maybe Sunday morning, mostly because it's well maintained and even restored. Very nice view from above the village; even more on a sunny day.
