  • We often hear of Apulia as to one of the regions most at risk of desertification in Italy. Going on vacation in Puglia and there is the sea, Sun and heat. Then, one day, you decide to go from Vieste to San Giovanni Rotondo. The road passes through the umbra forest. Remember the stories of my mother telling me that you have to turn on the headlights. Well, that's just what, to the top of the climb, happened to me: vegetation so thick that even the fact that trees are on opposite sides of the road causes are left bright! We set off from Vieste, with 31° C, after a couple of turns, the climb begins. Passed the shrubs close to the sea and olive trees, begins a few trees. Always in the Sun. After a while you climb, the trees grow and start some shaded Sunburst. + 29° c. A couple more bends and arrive in the shade of Oaks and suchlike trees. The temperature drops again. The trees continue to grow and thicken, with branches that touch each other from side to side of the road. You go up some more and turn on the headlights. Beautiful trees, nature trails, a nice crossing route with educational panels that help you understand the situation. Typical markets (but you must choose carefully!). Animals visible from a short distance. Top temperature: + 23° c. Then go down the other side and you have a gradation of light in the opposite direction from the first leg. My mother's stories were fascinating and I should have been prepared. In fact, it was a surprise anyway! If you go in Puglia, nice Avenue half a day: it's worth it.

  • I crossed the Forest Umbra by chance along the way Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo. What can I say, awesome, Woods in every direction you look, beautiful landscaping, setting sun barely succeeds in some places to make their way among the trees. We crossed in winter and can assure you that the Red leaves in every hue, was a really nice contrast to see. Cows that have accompanied us along the way, they made me feel at one with nature. And when I say cows mean cows on the street. Don't miss it if you go in Gargano.

  • Very nice walking paths into the woods. Grab a map for 3 euros at the tourist info point, and ask the local guide the best path for you. We followed a 3 hours path and it was very nice.
  • Beautiful park! Views are amazing. "Must see" in Gargano Area!
  • Nice to cool off a bit - on the other hand, the forest looks like the forests from northern Europe !
  • Great for a day in a natural area
  • It would be enough to know that it is the second largest Forest in Europe, rich in natural species of the most important things to know. A great resource for humanity.
