  • you regret of not having visited her, not to mention his rock crypt. Lovely neighborhood with small quiet place!

  • Church dating back to the year 1000. Built for favors received from Amalfi sailors who escaped to a storm in the lower Adriatic. Church and crypt restored but there is very little to see.

  • In the historic district of monopoly, a bit away from the most fashionable streets, I came across quite by accident in the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Amalfitana. Unfortunately was partially altered in the Baroque period and the subsequent restoration could not return in its entirety in its original appearance. However, beyond the facade definitely compromised, we find all the outer wall to the South and especially the apse Romanesque in its entirety with the long series of arches in the first and the small sculptures in the second. The Interior, a far cry from the monumentality of many Romanesque cathedrals of Puglia, preserves, in its simplicity, purity of lines almost intact and most importantly, in the contrast between the clear naked walls and dark wooden ceiling, has a soft light atmosphere almost spring. But the real poetry of the place is hidden immediately on the right of the entrance where, behind a low fence, a staircase leads to the crypt. It's a "magic" scale that while we descend underground, simultaneously takes us back in time leading us in a not very wide spaces carved into the rock: the original church, ex-votos of sailors amalfitans saved from sinking through the intercession of Mary. It's a magical compartment was saying, with its rough and wet walls at one time at least partly decorated with frescoes of which only survive some fragments of color, with some arches that spring from the floor with narrow columns, with an altar and some even large niches on the bottom of one of which sea water is seeping out of the ground, reminding us that once there since there was then buried at the harbour by the Normans. In this enchanted place where seems to feel next to ancient shadows strokes mariners, accompanies the smile of our guide, Angela, who with skill and thoughtfulness draws from many little details that allow us to do you feel even more part of the poem.

  • Evocative place where traces of Baroque dismounted have given way to an essential architecture. Very nice the crypt and the apse window
