  • The Church and especially the cloister are steeped in a strong influence of the presence of Catalan workers. A bit far from the city centre, the complex is very interesting and should be visited ... ... walk for the brave.

  • The Church of Santa Maria del Gesù (1478-1481) and the adjoining convent (1478-1520) rise in Modica, declared national monument shortly after the unification of Italy, belonged to the Franciscan Friars Minor observant. Preserves a beautiful cloister with two orders in late Gothic style, with variously decorated columns and each one different from the others. It is unique in all of southern Italy, which has stylistic surviving examples in Catalonia. The Church was built by restoring an old Franciscan building already exists at least since 1343, and thanks to the will and to the generosity of Countess Jeanne Ximenes de Cabrera, in order to celebrate in January 1481, the marriage of his daughter Anne with Fadrique Enríquez, his second wife, first cousin of the King of Spain Ferdinand the Catholic. In September 2010 the local Superintendent for cultural heritage and environment announced the completion of the renovation work, and the historic reopening to the public after 146 years of inaccessibility, there was the April 20, 2011, via the main entrance of the Church, having been rendered autonomous access to prison authorities. Since August 2016 the Church and its cloister are once again accessible and open to the public.

  • We came here by accident but we were lucky. We met Andrea, which made us from driving and gave many details showing many photos of details that probably alone would not have noticed. It was very well-trained and been limited thanks to him we enjoyed a lot more visiting this church, being empty, barren and fast risked being while being very nice. Thank you very much!!!

  • Entry is 3 euro per adult but comes with informative tour which is also provided in English. Finished restoration which started in 1991 in 2010. Definitely worth seeing!
  • Not open when I arrived. The location is in local residential area, and out of most tourist attractions area.
  • Great site dating back to 400. A must visit for the mixture of styles and for the absolute beauty in all its parts: the former Church, chapels and especially the cloister. A real gem!
