Chiesa di San Giorgio, Modica
Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
A prime example of Rococo architecture, Chiesa di San Giorgio, the primary cathedral of Modica, is noteworthy for the 250-step staircase leading up to it. Designated a World Monumental Heritage Site by UNESCO, this church has been rebuilt on numerous occasions due to destructive earthquakes in the 17th and 18th centuries. Climb the monumental steps to the base of the imposing facade and enjoy a panorama of the city. Examine the facade's ornate decorations, or step inside for a look at the silver altarpiece. See Chiesa di San Giorgio and all Modica has to offer by arranging your trip with our Modica vacation planner.

The Interior is immaculate, divided into three naves, is not as exciting as the façade, but worth a visit. You remain speechless watching the great polyptych by Bernardino Nigro of 1566 preserved in the apse, truly lovely. In short, Duomo di San Giorgio Modica icon equal. Not to be missed!!show original
