(4.8/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
A prime example of Rococo architecture, Chiesa di San Giorgio, the primary cathedral of Modica, is noteworthy for the 250-step staircase leading up to it. Designated a World Monumental Heritage Site by UNESCO, this church has been rebuilt on numerous occasions due to destructive earthquakes in the 17th and 18th centuries. Climb the monumental steps to the base of the imposing facade and enjoy a panorama of the city. Examine the facade's ornate decorations, or step inside for a look at the silver altarpiece. • This beautiful baroque church is located in the upper part of the city preceded by a long staircase and surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers, really nice Modica in all its angles beautifully decorated buildings with wrought-iron balconies, past beautiful sculptures half a day you will be rewarded.

  • Splendid as controversial monument, wanted by more conservative local agricultural aristocracy, as emblematic of its economic and political power, impatient as was the Royal authority and the Church hierarchy. Massive Renaissance-inspired, the first order, just lightened by the sumptuous Baroque entrances, it houses, in the Central apse, a huge polyptych by Bernardino Niger (black) Mannerist-inspired. The other two orders soar to over thirty meters with architectural and decorative solutions that combine past and present and burst in outer space with a majestic and articulated stairway, who becomes not a mere appendage but a natural offshoot. And while the Church of Rome sought to put a nineteenth-century positivist ideas, the embankment at local clergy had that wonderful Sundial and, in the underlying Church of Santa maria di Betlem, that amazing crib, which are nothing if not a celebration of science and the irrepressible verismo.
