Piazza Grande, Modena

(4.6/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Together with the 12th-century cathedral and soaring tower, Piazza Grande is the heart of Modena. This cobblestone-covered square, one of the oldest in Italy, is a meeting-point for locals. Covered arcades line the length of the square, offering many cafes, bars, and restaurants, and a tourist office. If you're interested in people-watching, this is a prime place to do it, as it seems always to be bustling with locals on nightly walks, or passegiatas. • Piazza Grande is the main square of Modena Cathedral and Ghirlandina Tower (torre di Modena) all places to visit. Usually the last Saturday of the month in piazza grande is the antiques fair. The square is quite large, the sides we also find the Town Hall, the ringadora, the stone statue of the Bonissima placed high on the corner of City Hall. Piazza Grande is very beautiful and charming and if you go in Modena, a visit is a must

  • If you sit in one of the benches arranged on the sides of the square, you can enjoy a 180° vision, See the Cathedral, Palazzo Comunale, the Rigadora, the stone statue of the Bonissima and Ghirlandina, called by the Modenese "Piopa" and if you close your eyes and breathe hard, you can see the many persnaggi who have passed through this wonderful square. Truly not to be missed!

  • Piazza Grande in a Midsummer's night, about nine o'clock, when the sky, before dressing for the night, sporting a dark blue cloak ineffable. As soon as you enter and you can see the first glimpse, the soul expands in one breath admired, roughly the opposite of when you get into a mall crowded: it must be heaven. As one White Pearl shows the Cathedral so humble in his incomparable beauty to leave with nobility that anyone has outposts on its base to enjoy the view of the square, chatting with friends or to take advantage of the free wi-fi. All around, to act as a Crown to that precious building (which if you lift your gaze, you wonder with outlandish figures and stories told on stone), arcades, and, still holding his gaze up, two women who keep watch with maternal gentleness about our city: the Virgin Mary above the building of the municipality and, a little further to the right, la Bonissima, symbol of the virtues that would be good to catch up. By day, climbing the stairs that are right under the statue of the Virgin Mary, another gasp: you are magically set in a medieval environment.
