  • The museum falls into two sections. One is a collection of medieval stonework, some being the original carvings from the cathedral. It's a good opportunity to see these carvings close to. The other...

  • It was so good to see the great original sculptures from the cathedral at eye level, and with good explanatory boards (Italian only).

  • This is a great museum and Maria did an excellent job helping us. Modena is a beautiful city and this museum is a great addition
  • An interesting supplement to a visit to the cathedral, it includes a number of religious treasures and some interesting sculptural items. If interest mainly to those with a keen interest in art and archaeology.
  • This museum is included in a cumulative ticket, costing 6 euros, which also allows access to: Ghirlandina bell tower, halls of the town hall, municipal vinegar factory (vinegar factory). When I went, the upper floor of the museum was closed for restoration, so I paid a 3 euro ticket to visit the ground floor only, consisting of the courtyard and two rooms. I recommend downloading the UNESCO app, at least you will have a short guide to some of the pieces contained here. In particular, the ark of San Gimignano, which originally covered the relics of the Saint in the cathedral, the column-bearing lion of one of the side doors of the Cathedral and the highlight of the museum: the series of metopes sculpted by an artisan working in Wiligelmo's circle. These are exceptional works, which probably represent the personifications of the most distant and unknown peoples of the earth, at least for the westerners of the twelfth century. There is a double-tailed mermaid, a dragon, a three-armed woman, an upside-down maiden and many other wonderful oddities!
  • The museum exhibits sculptures and ancient sculpture artifacts that adorned the cathedral: some rooms are currently closed for restoration work.
  • An invitation to introduce payment by debit or card in this beautiful museum. In 2022 it is not possible not to have this service. Thank you!
