Ghirlandina, Modena

4.5/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web
A watchful guardian over the city of Modena, Ghirlandina serves as the city's token landmark and traditional symbol. The elegant bell tower and World Heritage Site stands 82 m (269 ft) tall and can be seen from all angles of the city. The rectangular first five floors were built in 1179 and follow the Roman architectural canons, while the characteristically Gothic octagonal cusp and pyramid were later added. Two garland-like marble balustrades crown the tower and give it its name. Make the 200-step climb to the top, and consider using one of the audio guides, which are available in many languages. • Symbol of the city, the Tower (in Modena nobody called so, is simply "the Ghirlandèina" or "Piòpa") dominates the old town. Beautiful from outside, is worth a visit (the ticket price is very low, I'd say about 2-3 euros) because, once at the top, you can see the skyline of the city. Always gorgeous.

  • The Bell Tower of the Cathedral, very nice from the outside. The glance from the South end of the square, which shows a strong inclination of the structure in relation to the Church. You get paid and you climb on top. And there comes the catch. The first time in my life where I arrive atop a monument and I can enjoy the view of the city. Not only isn't open, and this distance, because it happens elsewhere. But the only outlet outside are some small Windows, always strictly closed. You are also down, but not so much for the entrance fee, which is reasonable. As for the lack of scenery in a place where you climb for that ...

  • Very characteristic for the area of Emilia. La Ghirlandina is the Bell Tower of the Cathedral (which is also slightly leaning to a failure in the territory, as in Pisa). The entrance on Sunday morning is pretty cheap, we rise from sula tower where there is a beautiful panoramic view of the whole city! Unfortunately there is no elevator and the steps necessary in (internal) are challenging so one must get trained! As the terrace is covered by the dome the visit is possible even for those who suffer from Vertigo, you should have no problems.
