As per title: to be an Italian Museum, with our heritage in my humble opinion is average, nice to visit but average Italian. Spread on one floor, the most attractive is the masterpiece of the bust of Francesco I d'Este by Bernini, then others are a work of Velázquez, some very special musical instruments (harp, two cellos inlaid, a cymbal fully marble) and paintings by Guercino. To visit.View original -

It is a typical example that talks about the nonexistent public attention to our cultural heritage. The collection is awesome, the rest not. Staging congested anachronistic and that penalizes the works, poor lighting, captions, insufficient, non-existent signage. Recently a small part of the collection was the subject of a new show, too bad the lighting is even worse than the previous, with spotlights that circumscribe sort of aureole in the works. Access and entry spaces are unadorned, in the area of the info point and bathrooms there is dirt. The book shop consists of 2 glass cabinets with few books. Among the positive notes on staff, polite and friendly, and great coffee in the cafeteria even though a refresher wouldn't hurt even at that place. Pity that such assets are properly valued.View original -
Ricca collezione di stupendi quadri e non solo in grandi sale, che raccolgono la collezione dei duchi d'Este. Alcune opere sono davvero eccezionali e conservate benissimo. Consiglio a tutti di andarle... more »
Large collection of beautiful paintings and not only in large halls, collecting the collection of the Dukes of Este. Some works are truly exceptional and very well preserved. I recommend everyone to go and visit.View original

Amazing collection. Worth the trip just for this place. Superb Hebrew language collection. Small but amazing!!!

Quality, rarity, paintings from the 13th century through the 18th century. Friendly, warmth from the associates. Well worth the 6 Euro fee for those outside the European Union. A very old collection that has aged beyond beauty. Superb. Do not miss the Gallery Estense. Check hours in Italy, they are there for amore not the money. An easy walk on the main road, Via Emilia from the tower in the center of Modena. The entrance is too the left. On viale Vi Veneto.

Wonderful gallery in Modena's centre. Showcasing a massive variety of art with outstanding artistic skill, it's just a shame that it doesn't get international media attention. The statue of Francesco I d'Este (pictured) makes the visit worth it, which will be cheap anyways (under 18s have free entry!).

Exquisite collection and well curated.

The Gallery maintains the art parimonio of the Dukes of Este from collections at one time kept in the Este Castle of Ferrara from the late 13th century until the last century austro Este Dukes of Modena acquisitions, a city that was the capital of the the Duchy after Ferrara from 1598 to 1859. Stand out among the other in chronological order the Modenese Guido Mazzoni Renaissance terracotta works of sculptors and Antonio Begarelli, the canvases of "primitive" between Barnaba da Modena and Tomaso da Modena, the works of Niccolò dell'Abbate, the paintings of the Venetian school from Cima da Conegliano in Veronese and Tintoretto, the bust of Francesco i d'Este portrait by Bernini, the same Duke by Velasquez, Emilian School of the 17th century works between Carracci, Guido Reni and Guercino, collections of musical instruments, bronze, coins and typically mirabilia. An immense heritage that can boast of being one of the largest among the art collections of the ancient Italian houses.View original
