  • The Galleria Estense in Modena, heir to the centuries-old story of the Este family, art collecting is one of the most important and oldest national galleries of Italy. Such a rich picture gallery you are adding an important collection graphics, a choicest collection of sculpture, ancient and modern, a significant selection of decorative arts and one of the most conspicuous Numismatic collections in the world. Also with the current reform of the Ministry of cultural heritage and tourism the Estense Gallery has become one of twenty independent national museums. Reading these premises and seeing which is inserted by the Ministry of culture between museums open on the first Sunday of the month for free, I decided to organize a visit to beautiful Modena, the city still unknown to us. As I usually do, I am keen to organise your trip by calling the sites you intend to visit to avoid unpleasant surprises, then call the Ferrari museums, Palazzo comunale, the Cathedral and Ghirlandina, IAT and I try to phone the estense Gallery without success, so I decide to send an email that readily respond the next day and informed me that the Gallery is closed on Sundays. How? One of the most important national galleries and the world closed on Sundays? You cannot, there must have been a misunderstanding, I can't believe a museum housing among many works by Bernini, Guercino, Veronese, Guido Reni, Tintoretto remains closed on Sunday, a Michelin-starred restaurant closed for lunch and dinner by staying open only in the afternoon for snacks, is not likely and then the site of the Ministry of culture indicates among the museums open on the first Sunday of each month. Reference an email on Friday to confirm and I attach photos of the communication of the website of the Ministry but not getting any response from the gallery. Sunday, I decided then to go anyway to Modena increasingly sure of misunderstanding and of course to find the Gallery open but it was not to be. Now I wonder, how is it possible in an Italy that should live off tourism keep closed a State Museum on Sundays? Better then to close the Museum and assign its works to another that will best enhance them. Now I know why a gallery so important both to more unknown ... I could still see and know the rest of the beautiful Modena.
