Tour delle Merlate - Castello Sforzesco, Milan
(4.4/5 based on 7,500+ reviews on the web)
Well-preserved and packed with history and art, Tour delle Merlate - Castello Sforzesco was built in the 15th century on the remains of an ancient fortification. Later renovated and enlarged, the castle became one of the largest fortresses in Europe. Once the private home of the Sforza-Visconti ruling family of Milan, this became the Austrian governor's official residence when Lombardy was taken into the powerful Habsburg empire. Largely reconstructed in the late 19th century by architect Luca Beltrami, it now houses museums of applied arts, antique furniture and wooden sculpture, musical instruments, and Egyptian art. The castle also includes hundreds of works of Italian art, including masterpieces by Canaletto, Tiepolo, Titian, Correggio, and Tintoretto, among others. Admission to the castle is free; you can book tickets for the castle museums by phone or buy them on site. • The powerful bulwark foreshadows today the impressive power, who had United the family Sforza and thus the city of Milan is. The entire system is simply huge and super get. The extensive connected Park is well maintained and absolutely beautiful days worth a visit. It runs from the Castle up to the Arc de Triomphe. On the day of our visit we have caught a wonderful sunny autumn day, why we have refused to visit the museums and outside enjoyed the time.

  • It can be reached by several roads. One possibility is through the Sempione Park. Very nice in autumn with a lake with ducks from where already it can be seen the Sforzesco Castle. There are areas in restoration as one of the main towers. Inside there are different activities (museums and libraries and a school) of music and is as an attraction the Michelangelo's Pieta. located in a Museum in the courtyard of weapons of the Castle (it is there from 2015 in a self-contained place, before he shared a place with works of Lombard sculptors. It can also be reached by underground (station launches, M2 green line).
