Santa Maria Presso San Satiro, Milan

(4.7/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Escape the busy streets of Milan in Santa Maria Presso San Satiro, a peaceful, 15th-century church where you'll see a famous trompe-l'oeil choir. The apse in the church was too small to do much with, so Italian architect Donato Bramante created an illusory apse. Stand at the back of the nave, and you'll think you're looking at a deep apse. If you stand to the side, you'll see that it the apse is actually quite small. Admire the Byzantine frescoes and other great artworks throughout the church. Put Santa Maria Presso San Satiro into our Milan tourist route planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The Church is hard to spot, so wedged between the other buildings, but it's absolutely a gem. Stay awhile at the entrance to admire the fake choir and walk toward the altar (maybe passed from one of the aisles so as not to disturb) continuing to watch it. The decorative effect of the coffered barrel vault is amazing.

  • This church has a very peculiar feature: the unusual perspective drawn up by Bramante, who found an ingenious way that gives us a real optical illusion to represent the space behind the altar, the false chorus, as it is known. Admission is free, but to illuminate some parts of the Church must pay 1 euro.

  • When you enter you can't imagine that the beauty that can be found inside. Seeing the Church from the bottom, the marvellous apse and beautifully decorated by the idea of being large and very deep, but it's only a game of perspective created by the wonderful creativity of Bramante which created an amazing optical effect. Well worth a visit as it is really close to the Duomo. Also of interest is the baptistery first created to house the sacristia.

  • Must be seen. You can enter on top of the Cathedral and have a great view to city center. Interior is decorated with beautiful statues and stained glass. You have place to sit and rest in cathedral .
  • Beautiful small church tucked away off the busy streets of Milano.
  • A small jewel in the heart of Milano! Built in 1400, it's worth a visit as it has Bramante's "fake perspective" paintings!
  • Nice place to visit.
  • Beautiful church near the Duomo
