Santa Maria Presso San Satiro, Milan
(4.7/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Escape the busy streets of Milan in Santa Maria Presso San Satiro, a peaceful, 15th-century church where you'll see a famous trompe-l'oeil choir. The apse in the church was too small to do much with, so Italian architect Donato Bramante created an illusory apse. Stand at the back of the nave, and you'll think you're looking at a deep apse. If you stand to the side, you'll see that it the apse is actually quite small. Admire the Byzantine frescoes and other great artworks throughout the church. Put Santa Maria Presso San Satiro into our Milan tourist route planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • A little gem in a small side street of Via Torino. If you take a walk to the Center, recommend spending. Upon entering focus immediately on the nave and move slowly, eventually enjoy a glance! A nice find!

  • As you enter you have the impression of being in a much larger building. The effect is due to the optical illusion created by Bramante tromphe d'oeil: the whole area behind the altar seems to be and instead is nothing more than a half meter space enclosed in a cleverly created. To see and very easy to reach from Duomo and Via Torino. Watch out for hours!

  • I returned this morning to visit, for the umpteenth time, the Church of San Satiro because, from the beginning of December, you have installed the new LED lighting. Bramante's masterpiece is, as always, something amazing, but the new lighting left me puzzled. First of all the new lights come on just to pay (insert a coin from 1 Euro in coin), then the new lights are very strong, obliterating that magical Penumbra effect. Now the details of the apse appear in evidence and the altar, that is hanging, casts shadows that spoil the fake perspective. On the other hand you can now take pictures, what before banned, as long as no flash. A dot in the least, but certainly not for the masterpiece Bramante.

  • Must be seen. You can enter on top of the Cathedral and have a great view to city center. Interior is decorated with beautiful statues and stained glass. You have place to sit and rest in cathedral .
  • Beautiful small church tucked away off the busy streets of Milano.
  • A small jewel in the heart of Milano! Built in 1400, it's worth a visit as it has Bramante's "fake perspective" paintings!
  • Nice place to visit.
  • Beautiful church near the Duomo
