  • The Basilica is by far one of the most important in the world for the history of architecture. Of very ancient origin, dates back to the 4th century, was linked to the near imperial Hofburg romano, was rebuilt 2 times in sec. XI and XII, while maintaining its original. The last rehash dates back to 1573 and was also interested in the dome finished in 1609. From Parco Delle Basiliche will contributes to see how this basilica consists of a central body, under the dome, which are aggregated minor buildings arranged in a radial pattern around it. Within the early Christian Temple unìatmosfera breathes, with exposed stone walls and the ambulatory top that runs along the perimeter of the dome. But that's not enough, there are works of art worthy of being admired, like the chapel of San Lorenzo,, right of entrance that retains traces of an ancient mosaic of the fourth century. Under the base of the second tower can still be seen a fresco of the 2nd century, depicting Saint Helena. From here you can access the Chapel which conserves a 14th century Madonna and child Citizens, a Christ on the throne of 20X0 and of hunting scenes of the 12th century. Also deserves a visit the chapel of San Sisto, both originals of the early Christian era. Under the ambulatory is a copy of Leonardo's last supper created by toscano Of Horns. From the chapel of San Lorenzo, you can access the underground basilica, where you see part of the foundations, made of huge blocks from some other early Christian building (perhaps an amphitheater)

  • Impressive basilica, though I expected a little more. Architecture-wise it is beautiful, but the decorations are somehow missing.
  • One of the oldest churches of Christianity. Similarity in structure and building techniques to Saint Sophia in Istanbul. Amazing Paleochristian mosaics in the chapel of Saint Aquilino.
  • Heritage architecture at its finest. I'm not a religious person, however, architecturally this is amazing, inside and out.
  • The church is calm and serene. The mosaic work exhibited is worth visiting and spending a few minutes for.
  • Beautiful.
