Piazza del Duomo, Milan

4.5
Piazza del Duomo represents not only the geographic center of the city, but also its artistic, cultural, and social hub. This vibrant public space is named after and dominated by the city's main cathedral, one of the largest Gothic structures in Europe. As one of the city's main tourist attractions, this busy piazza was created in the 14th century and gradually developed, along with the iconic cathedral, over the next 600 years. The piazza's overall plan, in its current form, dates back to the 19th century and is largely the work of architect Gieuseppe Mengoni. The monumental buildings encircling the piazza, with the exception of the cathedral and a palace that once served as the seat of the city's civil government, were introduced by Mengoni's design. The piazza is also home to one of the world's oldest shopping malls, housed inside an imposing four-story structure that is a popular meeting and dining place. • A must in Milan. This place is beautiful, often busy. Be sure to go early.

  • One evening, just before Christmas, I was in this square with a dear friend. The atmosphere created from the stalls and the tree of joy of Pandora, combined with the beauty of the Cathedral and the surrounding area, Rinascente, helped make our evening happy and unforgettable. With 3 euro we fed a man cold and hungry in front of the famous shopping centre, thanks to the convenient location of the stalls. The size of the square are remarkable, but I remember it was very well lit and you noticed every detail of the Duomo. In short, we spent a lovely evening in a nice place, a meeting point of many cultures and people of the heart.

  • The cathedral is so big that it takes up my whole view. Yet it appears to be light-weight as though it is fragile. It is amazing because the appearance has to be wrong. The entire building is colored white. The area also has other historical buildings including a library, playhouse and similar public buildings. The area is a plaza and doesn't have streets for cars but some motor vehicles are parked in the area. The building across from the cathedral is the old shopping mall that was made in the style of the Cathedral. It has a glass roof. Many of the shops are related to fashion clothing. There is a bookstore with fashion and design books.
  • Remarkable, beautiful place. Incredible history. Stunning architecture. I will remember the Cathedral, tower, Baptistery and Camp Santo forever. Though one cannot enter these buildings after 7 PM or so, the Piazza del Duomo is open to pedestrians until 1 AM.
  • Very beautiful inside and out. The main attraction and center of Milan as well as my highlight during my stay in the city. You have to purchase a ticket now to enter the cathedral and they will check bags. Drinks are allowed; the guards will ask you to dip some before sending you on your way
  • ci sono pochi posti dove si respira un'aria ancora così integra dell'italia del rinascimento, uno di questi è sicuramente PIsa. da visitare assolutamente! There are few places where you breathe an air still so integral to the Italian Renaissance, one of these is definitely PIsa. To visit absolutely!
  • The cathedral is so large that I have never been as impressed by a building. The Piazza is surrounded by other sites to see. I need a guide book to find them and understand what they represent. It's all so large that it's difficult to comprehend when I was there.
