Piazza del Duomo, Milan

(4.6/5 based on 8,000+ reviews on the web)
Piazza del Duomo represents not only the geographic center of the city, but also its artistic, cultural, and social hub. This vibrant public space is named after and dominated by the city's main cathedral, one of the largest Gothic structures in Europe. As one of the city's main tourist attractions, this busy piazza was created in the 14th century and gradually developed, along with the iconic cathedral, over the next 600 years. The piazza's overall plan, in its current form, dates back to the 19th century and is largely the work of architect Gieuseppe Mengoni. The monumental buildings encircling the piazza, with the exception of the cathedral and a palace that once served as the seat of the city's civil government, were introduced by Mengoni's design. The piazza is also home to one of the world's oldest shopping malls, housed inside an imposing four-story structure that is a popular meeting and dining place. • From this square you can tell everything, but not that it lacks character. Disproportionate, heterogeneous, confusing, chaotic and overcrowded at certain times. Agree. Yet it is precisely here, as in few other places, you have to come to try to understand Milan, its people, its culture, "open." Who is scandalized by the recent planting of palms and banana trees denotes a poor knowledge of history, that of those plants is lined with centuries in enchanting squares, palaces and hidden as private courtyards. This of course doesn't mean it's necessarily a good idea. Personally I find those plants not in tune, nor as a species or size, but it's a matter of taste anyway and Piazza del Duomo, apart from flowerbeds, appears unique and always beautiful.

  • With a very easy access by metro, on arrival of the Duomo station we ran into the facade of the Cathedral, very beautiful.

  • this place gives you goosebumps when you enter. the trip to the top and the view is not exciting as i thought it would. but the cathedral will certainly draw your emotions out an make you kneel and pray. the square in front is an awesome happening and you just have sit in one corner and bite into something and could easily pass an evening.
  • This is a very beautiful square with the towering presence of the Duomo Cathedral. It's surrounded by attractive buildings and is a magnet for tourists. Some just sit and reflect on the magnificence of the Duomo while others cavort, prance around and make an ass of themselves. Lots of al fresco dining places around here but pricey.
  • Popular tourist attraction, good spot for a photo. Don't get trapped by long queues at the ticket station to get to the top of the cathedral, a short walk around will reveal a ticket station with no queues. There are about 5 of them.
  • The most beautiful place in Milan! Amazing architecture, full of tourists and shops either for shopping or eating. The catholic church is astonishing and breathtaking!
  • Great plaza in the heart of the city. Lots of activity going on and a great spot for photos.
