La Rinascente, Milan

(3.9/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Just to the left of the Milan Cathedral, La Rinascente has been a favorite of Italian shoppers since 1887. It's the oldest department store in Italy, thriving until the World War I's resulting destruction and poverty and almost drove it out of business. Poet Gabriele d'Annunzio rescued it by rebranding it La Rinascente (the reborn), to symbolize the rebirth of Italy and the store. The name took on literal significance when a short circuit burned the building down on Christmas night 1918, only for it to be rebuilt. Now, you can explore six floors of brand-name fashion topped by a gourmet market and rooftop cafe with views of the cathedral. • See can you but reading even? Expensive brands, nothing really special here. Department store, it does not play in the first division.

  • High class store, prices are very high. The dining area on top of the terrace is beautiful.
  • The top floor restaurants have excellent food and the view overlooking the cathedral is great, but eating and drinking here can be a bit pricey. The department store has a great selection of fashionable and luxury brands, perfect for your Milanese shopping needs.
  • Huge department store next to the Duomo cathedral. Good selection of perfumes and cosmetics, all the hottest fashion houses. While many other places close down at 20:00, la Rinascente was open until 22:00 on an August Friday. We found the Food Market on the 7th floor the best place to do shopping for culinary souvenirs. Quite pricey, though.
  • Outrageous pricing. There are cafes and restaurants at the top and a small cafe at the basement level. All have arrogant rude staff and all different pricing. At one we were given a different menu to another table assuming to rip us off. Waited 20 mins for a coffee when it was quiet and ended up walking out. Milan can learn from the lovely people in Venice and Florence. I'll never be back to Milan.
  • Huge range of high-end fashion and accessories. Fantastic food selection on the top floor and the outside terrace is a great place to take a beer.
