Chiesa di Santa Maria presso San Satiro, Milan

4.7
Escape the busy streets of Milan in Chiesa di Santa Maria presso San Satiro, a peaceful, 15th-century church where you'll see a famous trompe-l'oeil choir. The apse in the church was too small to do much with, so Italian architect Donato Bramante created an illusory apse. Stand at the back of the nave, and you'll think you're looking at a deep apse. If you stand to the side, you'll see that it the apse is actually quite small. Admire the Byzantine frescoes and other great artworks throughout the church. • Tucked away in a small alley in the middle of Milan’s shopping district (via Torino) is Chiesa di Santa Maria presso San Satiro (Church or Basilica of Santa Maria at San Satiro). 95% of people walking...  more »
  • Is one of the most beautiful Basilicas in Milan, recently restored, contains the famous "Bramante's Perspective", an ancient Sacred and miraculous fresco architecturally frames depicting the Blessed Virgin with child. There are innumerable artistic treasures encased in this tiny little church near Piazza Duomo, so have to book a guided tour, because it's really worth to see and admire it knowing its history. But besides being a truly poetic, of rare beauty both architectural and sculptural pictorial, which, I would say it is also a Sacred place, and the Madonna of her altar is truly miraculous, so Milan built in antiquity this magnificent Basilica!!! Is a small jewel of immense soul, heart and eyes, highly recommended!!!

  • I am not here to dwell on historical artistic features of the building, of style, of Bramante or of the exterior of the Church visible from via Mazzini/Via Falcone. Remember, rather, the surprise in entering in this structure-completely oblivious of the lessons of modern art-and lightning balenatomi in the mind only in the approach to the apse to start laughing joyously. Since then, anyone who has paid for routes Mahmood with me I take him to this place to briefly share the feelings that were.

  • Do not miss this church. It's just metres away from the Piazza del Duomo. Pay attention to the wall behind the altar. It looks like a beautiful semi dome with lots of details. Walk all the way to the wall and look at it from the side. The semi dome is not such a thing but a perspective illusion. The wall is no more than 2 metres deep.
  • Nice little church. Stop by if you can.
  • An unexpected quiet and peaceful church in the middle of the crowded shopping area of via Torino
  • I only saw this from the outside but it is a very beautiful church!
  • Must be seen. You can enter on top of the Cathedral and have a great view to city center. Interior is decorated with beautiful statues and stained glass. You have place to sit and rest in cathedral .
