  • Strikingly beautiful, unique setting for souvenir photos. Ancient staircases lead to open views of the surrounding valleys

  • Arriving at a small town of Miglionico, Basilicata of just over 2,000 inhabitants, not far from Matera, it is impossible not to be attracted to the majestic castle of "Malconsiglio", where he held the conspiracy of the barons against King Ferdinand I of Naples. The Castle, which is shaped like a parallelogram flanked by seven towers of square shape (the oldest) or circular, perched atop a cliff which offers an excellent view of the green hills that surround Lake San Giuliano until getting lost with your eyes on the Bradano Valley. It's evocative stroll through the narrow streets of the town, admiring the broad landscape of towers and medieval doors until you reach the rich mother church. And, captivated by this maze of narrow streets, turned out to be a pleasant surprise visit to the restaurant-pizzeria "The meeting" where, in a sunny Sunday in almost mid-July, we were greeted, at lunch, with courtesy and kindness and we enjoyed simple meals and fragrant Earth lucana.

  • Well preserved structure, which stands on top of the small town of Miglionico. Famous for the conspiracy of the barons in 1485 (rebellion of the barons of the Kingdom of Naples against Spanish rule). The building is old (before the year 1000) but what you see now is due to interventions in 1100 and 1400 (in addition to 18th century additions). Everything there is to see is not only the outside and unfortunately not much compared to the size of the Manor. Apart from the perimeter of the Castle, the entrance opens to a beautiful courtyard (not great) in which you note left a well and 2 staircases (one that leads to the terrace, where you can see the view over the Valley and the rooftops of the old town of Miglionico) and leading to the first floor, while on the right there is a series of arches that support a porch (the upper Loggia is accessed with the same scale as mentioned earlier). The Interior rooms that I was able to visit, including the one that held the conspiracy of the barons and in which was rebuilt a scenic environment that reproduces the famous gunpowder plot (in addition to a multimedia) have nothing special to report (chimneys on the walls, some cross-vaulted room of Gothic origin), being mostly original furnishings and plastered. The most beautiful room should be the "Star" but I didn't see it and I don't even know if it's open. The visit just outside is still required (in Miglionico you will see the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses a polyptych by Cima da Conegliano, and a particular and precious wooden crucifix, not to be missed, and take a stroll around the narrow streets of downtown), and admission is free (at least we didn't have to pay, because the castle was open and there was no ticket office) but I know that organize tours, including the media path (check with the municipality or the Pro Loco). The castle is also the setting for regular shows and events (such as the reenactment of the conspiracy)
