  • Located at the tip of Capo Peloro, mountainous promontory which the relief is suddenly interrupted at about 1.5 km from the sea up to a sandy beach. The name of the city comes from the presence of an important Lighthouse attested that construction in the Roman era and preceded for centuries by points of light, which have been used to help the sailors to cross the Strait of Messina. The presence of the lighthouse was then transferred to the topography of Casale del Faro, and term of the district today Faro Superiore. One hypothesis would be less reliable than a derivation of the name of Pharii, the Greek people of the town of Pharis who would have moved into the area of Capo Peloro of their homeland in Laconia.
