Bell Tower and Astronomical Clock (Orologio Astronomico), Messina

(4.6/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
As both a current and historical art piece and functional device, Bell Tower and Astronomical Clock (Orologio Astronomico) offers quite the show at noon every day. At that time, the belfry’s mechanically-animated statues illustrate events from the civil and religious history of the city. Constructed in 1933 in Strasbourg, this clock measures up as perhaps the largest of its kind in the world. Repairs of such a complex machine proved quite expensive, and the bell tower no longer creates the sound in the original, mechanical way. You can climb the steps and understand more about the mechanism. Signs are in English. Show up early if you’d like to sit during the show. Put Bell Tower and Astronomical Clock (Orologio Astronomico) and other Messina attractions into our Messina travel itinerary maker, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • The astronomical clock is one of the main attractions of the city. At noon of automata are moving and moving each painting is a piece of history, a tradition or an allegory. Although antique look clock tower was built after the earthquake of 1908 and the mechanism was commissioned in Germany. Attracts many tourists, particularly cruise passengers passing through. Robot movement ends in 15 minutes.

  • You can't go to Messina and not see the clock running. Very impressive to hear the rooster and the lion and see figures moving. A show not to be missed! Very spectacular!

  • Go there at noon ... you will be amazed. Thrilling spectacle that lasts about 12 minutes. PS: here do end, wait for 12:15 to watch the window with the statue of death that marks the time on the child, the boy's senior citizen

  • The Bell Tower of the Cathedral of Messina with its famous astronomical clock is a true masterpiece. Be located at 12:00 in the square to observe the mechanical movement and sounds of several statues (Lion, gallo, etc.) is exciting and interesting at the same time.
