  • I've been visiting with friends in July to the archaeological site. Place full of charm, but that management!! First visits are handled by multiple bindings that "divide" the keys of the different churches. Therefore it can happen that you visit one or at most two based on the choice of the Guide (required). Second look shameful: the Esplanade in front of the site is used as a basis for the burst of fireworks. Burnt vegetation, garbage of all kinds, remains of fires. Also the city (UNESCO and next European capital of culture 2019) is managed very poorly: broken sidewalks, weeds everywhere .... another wasted opportunity for Italy!

  • Other interesting visit to do around the area of Matera for the characteristics of the site and to visit the caves outside the city not cured but to see how they lived since it was paeolitica

  • The visit I made was an experience that is difficult to forget that, in addition to completing the visit in Matera (wonderful view) was like traveling in time on the preparation and the skill of driving Francis Railey (according to me is able to bring back to life even the rocks!) My advice is to take a trip to the city with him to visit "really" Matera.

Where to stay in Matera

Instead of booking your rooms at a conventional hotel in Matera, consider staying at one of the city's cave hotels. The rock settlements in this area are part of a World Heritage Site, and several local hotels offer lodgings at cave dwellings dug into the limestone rocks, complete with private bathrooms, satellite TV, air conditioning, and mini-bars. Alternatively, you can also stay at a small B&Bs or private inn in the old town, where you can explore most of Matera's main attractions on foot.
