Don't go away from Matera without taking some time to visit the Park, it would be like to live it in half. On the opposite side of the ravine, you can enjoy a unique view over the city, allowing you to embrace with the extension of the Matera sassi, with all buildings and structure of recognizable neighborhoods, noticing the contrast with the new town, appreciating the structure perched on the slopes of hard limestone, until losing the eye surrounding plateau dotted with caves and vegetation in summer parched by the Sun and spring a palette of colors. The guided tour (15 euro per person) provides access to some rock churches, among which the famous Madonna degli Angeli, where in ' 62. German Rudolf Kubesch stole the faces of frescoes. Episode which led to the law of protection and preservation of Matera. I wish you the guide who drove us into the three hour visit, Mario: perfect orator, personable, engaging, able to explain complex concepts from geology to anthropology to Botany with simplicity and examples very intuitive. Gave us a journey not only through the Murgia and its caves, but also through the millennia and the story that featured before the rock formations and the city with its evolution over the centuries. Charming walk along the scenic trails, the scent of thyme and savory. Tip: bring a water bottle with fresh water, a hat and sensible shoes. In summer it is very hot, although the plateau is ventilated and most explanations occur in caves. We didn't have time to try it, but the environmental education centre which offers the interesting menu park visitor for lunch. To be booked at 0835332262 or at 3888925407 (number even info on schedules of guided tours)

Site management trained to do drawer, but beyond this incredible natural park. Adds to the beauty of our beautiful country. Bring the kids because they will too and it is not known how many years you can still enjoy a show like

The Park is closely tied to the stones and vice versa, you may not realize Matera and its history without having seized the hidden secrets of the Murgia plateau and in the territory. And this is only possible with the help of an experienced guide. The tour can be booked from MATERA CITY TOUR (to trust for all other visits to Matera). The Guide, MARIO MALEMA, made the experience very memorable, what struck me most and that I appreciated, was its ability to expose the complex history of this amazing territory at a rate consistently maintained and full of references to past and points that still had to come, creating a kind of Spider Web where you dug out the tale that slowly took the body and meaning up to compose a clear picture of millennia long adventure that we all a bit we belong. In today's group there were also two boys around 10/12 years who were appointed by his assistants and that with him they represented the facts recounted immediate understanding and often funny, making them really, is safe, for example, that do not easily forget how was born the plateau! More than 3 and a half hours and don't get enough! If, like me, you are passionate about ancient Rome, you'd think that in Italy nothing can bear its confrontation and instead you will discover that the history of Matera and its development is unparalleled, not least for continuity over the millennia.

Where to stay in Matera

Instead of booking your rooms at a conventional hotel in Matera, consider staying at one of the city's cave hotels. The rock settlements in this area are part of a World Heritage Site, and several local hotels offer lodgings at cave dwellings dug into the limestone rocks, complete with private bathrooms, satellite TV, air conditioning, and mini-bars. Alternatively, you can also stay at a small B&Bs or private inn in the old town, where you can explore most of Matera's main attractions on foot.
