  • The visit allows you to understand how it was collecting water for the needs of the population and how they got this huge reservoir, digging into the rock (springs), to accommodate 5 million liters. Too bad if you are not near to guide, feels a little due to the echo!

  • Below the center of Matera, to over 16 meters in depth a number of huge cisterns carved into the rock then coated and made raincoats have gathered for centuries domestic water to all residents. Now it has become a tourist destination of great attraction and thanks to the skilful positioning of stairs and walkways in iron can reach the bottom to appreciate construction technique and method of which water is drawn. A curiosity and a reality that technique and breadth is unique in the world which is called "Diver down" as a person (a diver) periodically descended into the bowels to perform maintenance and cleaning. Not to be missed. Mario 48

  • The retrieval system of the water was very ingenious, even how to make waterproof the cistern with earthenware.

  • A huge water storage area carved out of the rock beneath one of the main squares in Matera. This was used by the inhabitants of Matera for centuries until piped water arrived in the early 20th century. It was "rediscovered" in the1990's, and is now a visitor attraction. We had a wonderful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide with impeccable English. I really wish I could remember her name. Highly recommend this fascinating tour.
  • A giant water storage system 16m deep below one of the main squares in Matera. It was abandoned in the early 20th century, and "rediscovered" in the 1990's. For a mere 3Euro, we were brought on a fascinating tour by a tour guide who was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. And spoke impeccable English too. Highly recommended.
  • It's a unique place in the world and in Italy. Access by guided tours only. Tours are run both in Italian and English throughout the day. They only last 25 minutes but it's an interesting piece of history to learn. I was told this location is very busy during the summer so it is recommended that tourists go and book a place in a tour as soon as they arrive in Matera because places on each tour are limited and people are booked on tours on a first come first served basis. Tours in English are at 10.30am - 12.30pm - 3.30pm - 5.30pm.
  • A huge underground water system.. very very interesting.. there's a guided tour provided too.. the guided tour is very useful as they gave us all important and interesting facts about the cistern.. they used torchlights to show us the water levels and shells etc.. very very fascinating tour!
  • To be quite frank -cheap entrance, English tours available, takes 25 minutes. Large underground tanks with loads of steps and no disabled access (just to be clear) Tour guide very nice, not selling anything. Quick in and out. It's something else, I am told , and apparently one of a kind in the region.
