  • It is a magical place where you travel back in time. Thanks to the love for their land and the history of the people who lived the spouses Cardenas succeeded in thirty years to create a place full of history, emotions and goodies, like the sheets where written formulas to get the headaches once used by women healers. Absolutely worth going to check them out but I recommend, let yourself be enchanted by the stories of Mr. Cascione, all buy meaning and fascination.

  • This museum is the result of 30 years of work. Cardenas who will welcome you and will answer all your questions about life in the sassi. The laboratory-museum recreates the environments of the houses of those who once lived in the sassi with objects, furniture and pictures. It's a real blast from the past. I recommend it to all comers. I also recommend reading the book tales of the Museum translated into English that collects testimonies of those who lived in the sassi.

Where to stay in Matera

Instead of booking your rooms at a conventional hotel in Matera, consider staying at one of the city's cave hotels. The rock settlements in this area are part of a World Heritage Site, and several local hotels offer lodgings at cave dwellings dug into the limestone rocks, complete with private bathrooms, satellite TV, air conditioning, and mini-bars. Alternatively, you can also stay at a small B&Bs or private inn in the old town, where you can explore most of Matera's main attractions on foot.
