Where to stay in Matera

Instead of booking your rooms at a conventional hotel in Matera, consider staying at one of the city's cave hotels. The rock settlements in this area are part of a World Heritage Site, and several local hotels offer lodgings at cave dwellings dug into the limestone rocks, complete with private bathrooms, satellite TV, air conditioning, and mini-bars. Alternatively, you can also stay at a small B&Bs or private inn in the old town, where you can explore most of Matera's main attractions on foot.

  • Little shop that produces beautiful souvenirs. Although I haven't bought anything though I really appreciate the craftsmanship of these people who work with passion. See for those who want to buy nice objects as a souvenir

  • One of the oldest workshops making and selling local souvenirs. Courtesy, and preparation

  • The shop sells souvenirs manufactured in the workshop itself but the craftsman presents the history of its products and the evolution of the same by necessity a little present to remember. Not to be missed if you want to have another glimpse of the local culture.
