  • Just think about the history and the context in which they were created is ... ... amazing! Remains a very important site.

  • I've been to the crypt of original sin with a group of friends in June this year to get there was a company so much that we had to postpone the tour because we arrived late. The crypt is wonderful but told with detachment and in the dark. Seated on uncomfortable wooden stairs to go total nellassenza of light. Recorded audio impersonal that does not transmit emotions. Antonio guide I've had the pleasure of hearing on other occasions is always very careful and precise. Passionate and prepared

  • Site very fascinating and characteristic for leasing and artistic content. In my opinion the high ticket price must be justified to the source as explained the Guide well prepared and extremely available that targets for 5 years to preserve every half cyclic restoration frescoes. Move from visitor to lender made me feel better. Missing the signs and take the road leading to the ticket office.

  • This place was kind of an afterthought on my recent trip but I am glad we finally decided to try to squeeze it in on the way to the airport! It's about 20 minutes outside of Matera and the coordinates they give you in the email are correct, I'm not sure why so many people comment that it's hard to find. We reserved the night before but everything was ready when we arrived first thing in the morning. You drive your car down to the site which is about 700 meters after checking in. It's a group tour but you sit in the cave while the audio guide plays. It really is amazing. We arrived at 0900 for check-in (reservation time was 0930) and were on the road by 10:00. Definitely a must see in the area!
  • Very nicely arranged lightshow to help you see the master paintings of this cave. It's not big and it doesn't take long, but if you are anywhere close to appreciation for art (history), it's well worth a visit.
  • Uncomfortable place to reach and we must also do a short stretch of dirt road maybe drive. In the end though, there is a unique, beautiful, full of history and faith. It also helps to fund maintenance and restoration of the crypt. You have to go and see ... Absolutely

  • Great experience, maybe not cost justified, forbidden to take pictures. I share the concerns of other reviewers about the directions to the place, check in a cottage, road to get completely unpaved. Presentation of the cave very well structured with the help of multimedia tools, also available in other languages.

Where to stay in Matera

Instead of booking your rooms at a conventional hotel in Matera, consider staying at one of the city's cave hotels. The rock settlements in this area are part of a World Heritage Site, and several local hotels offer lodgings at cave dwellings dug into the limestone rocks, complete with private bathrooms, satellite TV, air conditioning, and mini-bars. Alternatively, you can also stay at a small B&Bs or private inn in the old town, where you can explore most of Matera's main attractions on foot.
