Cripta del Peccato Originale, Matera

(4.6/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Visit the ninth-century frescoes of the artist known as the “Painter of Flowers of Matera” at Cripta del Peccato Originale. Lying among southern Italy's vineyards and wheat fields, this rock wall cavity is known as the “Sistine Chapel of Rock Art,” and contains some of the oldest rupestrian art of the region. The frescoes, interpreting Old and New Testament stories, have recently been restored to their original glory. Cripta del Peccato Originale is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Matera Edition.

  • Magnificent inland, as well as the play of light and the movie. Pity that no browser is extremely difficult to find. The price of 10 € is in my opinion excessive (when compared to certain museums in Florence and Rome ...). Besides the haunt (you have to book and be there half an hour before) is within a farm (the cave is located in their land), very nice, as well as products that expose; so in addition to the admission price to the cave, you feel almost obliged to spend another 10/20 €

  • Thanks to our guide Imma Dara, we were visiting the crypt: there are no words to describe this place ... you must go there to realize

  • The spirit that pervades the view among the rocks and the Rock-Hewn Churches of Matera draws even more benefit from a guided tour of the crypt of the original sin, not surprisingly called the Sistine Chapel of rock civilization. The place is about ten kilometers from Matera, on the road to power, and you need to schedule an appointment for a guided tour fee. The guide left me breathless, the passion deepened perfectly transmitted as well as the varied exposure and language skills, at least on a par of creation that the cave was discovered gradually in a crescendo of explanations and visions that did not let me down at all

  • The crypt and frescoes are beautiful and very charming, helpful and friendly staff. But perhaps the price (€ 10) is exaggerated: after all, this is a visit of about twenty minutes in a unique setting with a recorded voice that explains things. Maybe it would be better if it were the guidance to illustrate the frescoes and what they mean. However it is a must see for those who go to Matera. Recommend a meal at the nearby agriturismo Dragone: very high availability and courtesy.
