Visit the ninth-century frescoes of the artist known as the “Painter of Flowers of Matera” at Cripta del Peccato Originale. Lying among southern Italy's vineyards and wheat fields, this rock wall cavity is known as the “Sistine Chapel of Rock Art,” and contains some of the oldest rupestrian art of the region. The frescoes, interpreting Old and New Testament stories, have recently been restored to their original glory. • Location not easy to find nor to reach, and thus extra rewarding. The audio guide gives an excellent insight into the wall paintings, a "must see" site whenever in or near Matera
  • The crypt is very original and well worth the visit. You have to go with a guide who can explain the history of religions culture while you are in the shuttle.

  • Not easy to get there, you find out. The note, in my humble opinion, it seems a little over the top.

  • The crypt and frescoes are beautiful and very charming, helpful and friendly staff. But perhaps the price (€ 10) is exaggerated: after all, this is a visit of about twenty minutes in a unique setting with a recorded voice that explains things. Maybe it would be better if it were the guidance to illustrate the frescoes and what they mean. However it is a must see for those who go to Matera. Recommend a meal at the nearby agriturismo Dragone: very high availability and courtesy.
