(4.7/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Visit the ninth-century frescoes of the artist known as the “Painter of Flowers of Matera” at Cripta del Peccato Originale. Lying among southern Italy's vineyards and wheat fields, this rock wall cavity is known as the “Sistine Chapel of Rock Art,” and contains some of the oldest rupestrian art of the region. The frescoes, interpreting Old and New Testament stories, have recently been restored to their original glory. Cripta del Peccato Originale is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Matera Edition.

  • The cave is beautiful with cave paintings dating back to 800 a.d., where he represented the establishment, stuoefacenti the colors still very much alive. The Madonna and child, in the Central apse, seems still alive. Not to be missed.

  • You only visit by appointment and it really is a "sin" not to go there. It seems to be in a secret place immersed in the past.

  • We came to know casually of this place, we were in Sydney, so we made a detour and went to see. The place can be reached with some difficulty by car, but following the directions of the Navigator and trusting, even when they seem to get in the middle of nowhere, you reach the place. The cave is beautiful, unexpected. Cave paintings dating back to 800 ad, with the cycle of creation, very beautiful colors, a carpet of flowers painted a vivid red. The Madonna and child, in the Central apse, seems alive. A must see. Tip: get information to how to arrive at the site through MUSMA, the Web site of MUSMA, or the site of the cave of original sin.

  • The crypt and frescoes are beautiful and very charming, helpful and friendly staff. But perhaps the price (€ 10) is exaggerated: after all, this is a visit of about twenty minutes in a unique setting with a recorded voice that explains things. Maybe it would be better if it were the guidance to illustrate the frescoes and what they mean. However it is a must see for those who go to Matera. Recommend a meal at the nearby agriturismo Dragone: very high availability and courtesy.
