Visit the ninth-century frescoes of the artist known as the “Painter of Flowers of Matera” at Cripta del Peccato Originale. Lying among southern Italy's vineyards and wheat fields, this rock wall cavity is known as the “Sistine Chapel of Rock Art,” and contains some of the oldest rupestrian art of the region. The frescoes, interpreting Old and New Testament stories, have recently been restored to their original glory. Cripta del Peccato Originale is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Matera Edition.

Where to stay in Matera

Instead of booking your rooms at a conventional hotel in Matera, consider staying at one of the city's cave hotels. The rock settlements in this area are part of a World Heritage Site, and several local hotels offer lodgings at cave dwellings dug into the limestone rocks, complete with private bathrooms, satellite TV, air conditioning, and mini-bars. Alternatively, you can also stay at a small B&Bs or private inn in the old town, where you can explore most of Matera's main attractions on foot.

  • Some friends had raved about this visit, but I have to say that the reality far exceeded my every expectation. Considerable help preparation and organisation of the visit. Not to be missed by anyone visiting Matera.

  • The crypt and frescoes are beautiful and very charming, helpful and friendly staff. But perhaps the price (€10) is exaggerated: after all, this is a visit of about twenty minutes in a unique setting with a recorded voice that explains things. Maybe it would be better if it were the guidance to illustrate the frescoes and what they mean. However it is a must see for those who go to Matera. Recommend a meal at the nearby agriturismo Dragone: very high availability and courtesy.

  • The crypt is beautiful and mystical charm. The whole is supported by a highly suggestive. Shame about the cost. A little high for a single location.
