I documented on count Tramontano, Squire who then was killed by the people tired of his abuse and the castle that was getting erect. From a distance the round tower lets imagine the Majesty of the building but on the spot, weeds and unstable hurdles staying there to delimit the moat. Show not nice! Too bad! A wonder of the genre should be safeguarded and ... recovered!

Unusual Castle, dominating the city but has an entrance on the opposite side of the city. Still being restored, pleasant to walk to the garden

Castle closed and abandoned. We hope to be restored as soon as possible because from the outside always has its charm. At the moment it is worth visiting

  • Not the no. 1 spot in Matera for sure. But worth if you have seen most of the highlights already.
  • Castle itself is beautiful the dislike is all for the city of matera which has left the castle in the middle of an incomplete park with shameful facilities and degradation of the area
  • Shame to have such beautiful works and not be able to see and explore

  • The castle would be interesting if it were even possible to visit it. You might better manage also the panoramic view over the city of rocks.

Where to stay in Matera

Instead of booking your rooms at a conventional hotel in Matera, consider staying at one of the city's cave hotels. The rock settlements in this area are part of a World Heritage Site, and several local hotels offer lodgings at cave dwellings dug into the limestone rocks, complete with private bathrooms, satellite TV, air conditioning, and mini-bars. Alternatively, you can also stay at a small B&Bs or private inn in the old town, where you can explore most of Matera's main attractions on foot.
