  • The Cathedral of Massa Marittima has been a revelation. Its amazing location, rather a side which is also asymmetric, immediately strikes the visitor. Tuscan Romanesque style (I think pisano) infuses spirituality and solemnity to the structure. There is a fine façade with the miracles of St. Cerbone in low relief on the central port of entry. Inside, there is a beautiful altarpiece by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, the first 300: while the front of the blade bears an image of the Madonna and child that still suffers from the stillness and the Byzantine style and International Gothic solemnity, the back of the blade reveals frescoes by more plasticity that portend the imminence of the Renaissance and the sensitivity of Lorenzetti to a new artistic sensibility. So the blade is also at the back.

  • Massa deserves to go there on purpose even if it is outside the normal circuits. The square is gorgeous and the Cathedral with its stairs to access it is unique and wonderful. Everything points to medieval times more beautiful and interesting.
