I got there by accident one day that I was going to, coming from Premariacco travelling towards Capriva along Interior roads, to see the landscape. And a place, even for me that I'm an atheist, where peace is breathed in deeply and where silence has lightness of air ... The ancient Abbey, whose origins are not entirely clear, it represented in the past and is still today, especially due to its geographical location, the connection point between East and West, where different cultures can meet and dialogue. The origins of the Abbey are rather controversial and not always validated by evidence but according to tradition, in the year 1800 the hermit Abad you arrived in these lonely places to find peace for your soul and we built a small oratory and a cell . This atmosphere of serene spirituality attracted a growing number of the faithful, the cells multiplied so much that the oratory became a monastery under whose guidance were called the canons regular of Saint Augustine. In 1070 it was inaugurated the church dedicated to Saint Peter. In 1090, the rosacense monastery was elevated to the rank of Abbey and in the following year Augustinian rule was suppressed in favor of the Benedictines. In the middle ages Rosazzo took over the role of spiritual guide, also an economic function. Later, during the struggles between Aquileia and Cividale, between Venice and the Imperials, the monastery was converted into a defensive fortress. The Benedictine monks after over three centuries, they left the Abbey which was ruled from 1423 until 1751 (year of the Suppression of the Patriarchate of Aquileia), from Abbots, whose coats of arms are visible even today in the lunettes of the cloister. During this period, in 1522 the Dominicans settled in the Abbey and remained for 248 years. In 1509 after several vicissitudes of wars and raids, a fire completed the work of ruin. Only twenty years later began the rebirth of the Abbey due to the commendatory Abbot Giovanni Matteo Giberti, who availed himself of the assistance of Venceslao Boiani, architect of cividale. In 1823 the Bishop Emanuele Lodi transformed the Abbey into the summer residence of the Bishops of Udine; the Bishop of Udine was awarded the title of Marquis of Rosazzo, a title that was later recognized also by the Kingdom of Italy in 1927. Merit of mons. Alfredo Battisti, former Archbishop of Udine, was the rebirth of Rosazzo: her asking to include the building works to be restored after the earthquake of 1976.
Is an ancient Abbey of Benedictine monks renovated excellently. From the cloister you reach the rose garden with endless and old varieties of roses, native and also unavailable. Not to be missed in May and flower market. From the rose garden's gaze is lost on the Friulian plain and, on a clear day you can see the Adriatic coasts of Friulian beaches. Place of peace and spirituality that you can stay a few days and place where are held conferences and exhibitions on various themes in the halls arranged alongside the Church.
This little Abbey has a beautiful rose garden with plants that are in some cases centuries. Every year it hosts a crowded flower show.
