Abbazia di Santa Maria Arabona, Manoppello

Santa Maria Arabona is a Cistercian abbey in Abruzzo, in central Italy. It is located at Manoppello in the frazione also called Santa Maria Arabona. In Roman times the area was sacred to the goddess of fertility and virginity Bona Dea.ArchitectureThe most important of the abbey buildings still extant is its church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whose construction began in 1208 with the transept and the apse. The edifice remained partly unfinished, due to financial and political troubles within the order. The church is built on the Latin Cross plan, with the nave ending in an apse housing the high altar. The aisles support the ceiling. The interior is very sober, apart from the richly decorated tabernacle and Paschal candle in Gothic style. The choir contains frescoes by Antonio Martini di Atri dated 1377.The church, which was restored in the 1950s, is surrounded by a park from which the rest of the abbey is accessed.

Along the via Tiburtina towards Pescara, a few kilometres away from the beautiful church of san Clemente a Casauria is the Church Santa Maria Arabona is just as interesting. Was founded in the 13th century. as a Cistercian Monastery. The Gothic architecture of the Church is perhaps the only example of Cistercian Gothic architecture in Abruzzo. The Church has a Latin cross structure divided into three naves. Was not finished and was left unfinished after the transept. In other words it is a church without façade. Nevertheless, the Interior is majestic with high pillars ending in a pointed vaulted roof. Among the furnishings: a candlestick resting on column decorated with floral motifs. Three frescoes of the fourteenth century. , in excellent condition, you can see behind the altar. Santa Maria di Arabona is a place of worship that has an extreme charm and well worth a visit. Inquire though on opening to the public. Mario

This magnificent Abbey, built on the remains of a Roman temple Ara bona (dea) hence the name, in high position on green hill overlooking the Valley, founded and then abandoned by the Cistercians and now entrusted to the Salesian Fathers, is a significant testimony to the local Romanesque, with its Latin cross, only for the part of the transept, which still gives us a wonderful time in cruise , a rose window in the apse and always in the apse frescoes preserved by Antonio Martini di Atri (a Holy crowned, Maria and the crucifixion), a spectacular Tabernacle and a column for the Paschal candle. In a chapel in the left transept now destined to the equestrian order of the Holy Sepulchre, other beautiful frescos later (with a deposition of Christ, Saint Sebastian and Saint Dominic).
