Castello Scaligero, Malcesine
(4.7/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web)
Time seems to stand still at Castello Scaligero, a medieval structure with winding battlements and a tower overlooking Lake Garda. It is believed that a fortification of some sort has existed on this site since as early as the fifth century, but most of the structures visible today were added in the 13th century by the della Scala family, rulers of Verona. During that time the structure was fortified and became an important part of the region’s defensive system. Since 1902 the castle has been a national monument, and today it contains a small museum on the natural history of Lake Garda. Climb the tower for sweeping views of the lake and the town, but be careful of the clock bell, which chimes earsplittingly on the hour. Guided tours can be pre-booked by telephone. Put Castello Scaligero into our Malcesine holiday planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Got up early to avoid the queues for the Monte Baldo cable car ride - wear lots of layers as verrrry cold at the top but some spectacular views! Then head back down to Malcesine / a quaint little town...  more »
  • Certainly worth a look. Interesting exhibitions on local geology, local fishing and the German poet Goether, who was a frequent visitor.
  • The views of Lake Garda are excellent from here. This castle you can pick up the feel of what is was like to live in the castle in the 16 century. If you are fit enough go up the tower. This castle is...  more »

  • A lovely castle built on a cliff outcrop on the lakeshore a fairy tale which hosts many weddings. A great place for fine views of the lake & mountain backdrop. Some lovely old frescos & a nice natural history museum. Quite a few steps & inclines so may be unsuitable for the elderly & people with mobility issues. Fantastic views from the tower roof in all directions. A must see when visiting this nice town
  • Such nicely kept grounds. Walk up all the way to the top of the tower for a wonderful view of lake Garda and adjacent town. Build up your appetite while exploring the museum grounds and castle walls. Plenty of picture opportunity throughout the grounds. The stairs leading up to the tower can be a little cramped by space and other climbers. Keep that in mind and you'll be just fine.
  • Great views from the tower of the Lake and the town. Worth the visit. Plenty of interesting info and laid out in a compelling style. Ticket can be included in a combi with the Funivia.
  • Some pretty cool history but not overflowing with info. absolutely fantastic views aswell!
  • Great castle and town. Classic middle-european style. Good place for camping around.
