  • La rocca di Maiori perched atop the hill overlooking the villages of Accola and Carpineto. Castle intended as a protected dwelling entrenched, as well as being the Centre of a feudal Lord, but rather rocca — a fortress built to defend it as a refuge of the local population against the raids of marauding Lombards and later by pirates. According to some scholars, the work began a few years after the death of Sicard, Lombard Duke of Benevento, which occurred in the year 840. Just the year before the predicted Duke had ravaged and plundered the contradas of the Amalfi coast. The construction of the fortress was built around the old church dedicated to s. Nicola de Thoro Plano. Ogi can be admired structure was erected, restore and expand by duchi Piccolomini in 1461 from Siena, who were appointed by Ferdinand I of Aragon feudatories of the Duchy of Amalfi.

  • Dominant Maiori and the Valley of Tramonti, fortress, built in the year 840, later restored and expanded, has a polygonal perimeter of walls with embrasures, buttresses and 9 round towers. Dami Martino, the last Castellan, accompanies, with news details and amusing anecdotes, a guided tour of what remains of shelters, warehouses and cisterns, which made it possible to accommodate a garrison and citizens seeking refuge. The path: a narrow uphill about 800 steps, between old houses and squares, open, as you climb up a spectacular panorama.
