Torre Guinigi, Lucca

#3 of 141 in Things to do in Lucca
Observation Deck · Tourist Spot
An easily recognizable regional landmark, Torre Guinigi features a hanging garden on its roof. Built in the late 1300s by a local wealthy family of merchants, the tower is a typical example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture. The tower was constructed to give a look of refinement to one of the nearby houses, as these structures were once a symbol of the prestige and prosperity of the richest families in the area. The imposing brick tower is decorated with various plaques, cornices, and coats of arms. Don’t skip a climb to the top of this city symbol, as the roof offers 360-degree views of the town and the province, with the rolling Tuscan hills fading into the distant mountains. • Torre Guinigi is an iconic landmark in Lucca. The tower with its trees is 45 meters high with approximately 232 steps. If you suffer from Acrophobia it might be a bit of a problem reaching the...  more »
  • We climbed the tower as a family of three with a 13-year-old son. We had to book in advance but the tickets were only €3 each, a real bargain for the photos of the view at the top. On starting the...  more »
  • The unmistakable tower offers amazing views on Lucca and its surroundings. Observing the city from the shade of the Holm oak trees enjoying the breeze is an amazing experience and a must in Lucca. As....  more »
  • Really nice experience, we went in the early evening and it was beautiful! Only bad thing to say is there was so many people at the top it was a little hard to move! They could do with having a direction of movement sign to move the flow of people in the right way! But really lovely and recommend!
  • The entrance fee is about 5 euros. There is no cloak room but if you have bags or need to leave something, you can do so at the cash register. They're really friendly and helpful. There are about 280 stairs and there are no toilet facilities so plan your climb accordingly. The climb isn't too demanding but some people had problems reaching the top. The view and the the trees at the top are well worth the climb so I suggest you go ahead and do it.
  • I enjoyed this climb to the top. Especially when reaching the metal half of the stairs and everyone's footsteps became a percussion rhythm for the remainder to the top. The view was good also.
  • This was very interesting. The climb is pretty straightforward on a sturdy staircase. The trees at the top are very different and excellent views of Lucca and the mountains
  • Interesting alternative to the leaning tower of Pisa, you get a view of the whole city. Down side is how cramped it is. There is limited space and many tourists moving about. It takes time to go around the 4x4 roof terrace. Cost us only 5 euro pp. Worth the time and money.
