San Michele in Foro, Lucca
(4.4/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
When in Tuscany, don't miss the chance to admire the historical sights of Lucca, of which San Michele in Foro is a major highlight. A church has stood on the ancient Roman forum in Lucca since at least the 8th century, but the building of the current structure started about 200 years later and lasted for several centuries. The result is an intriguing combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles, especially visible on the facade adorned with numerous arcades and sculptures. The interior of the basilica is more subtle and offers a perfect setting for enjoying ecclesiastic art. Bear in mind that the basilica is still active, so be respectful of worshippers. • Very special Church, made entirely of marble, is located right in the heart of Lucca. Really interesting is the Interior and the exterior, where there are four orders of loggias

  • The Church under Pope Alexander II was built from 1070. The works lasted a long time and the move to later periods has led to the creation of an architectural work with contrasting styles. The result is a Gothic basilica with Romanesque motifs. The façade reaches 4 metres high rising above the roof and features carvings and sculptures. It is adorned with four rows of lodges where the large marble statue of the Archangel Michael. A legend in the ring on the finger of the lucchese wants Angel is tucked a diamond of huge size and which can be seen his twinkle positioning itself in a specific point of the square. The plan is a Latin cross, and inside there are three naves. The main works are the Madonna and child in glazed terracotta by Luca della Robbia and a painting depicting four Saints by Filippino Lippi.

  • Of course, you want to come and watch! Lucca is generally very beautiful town, if there is none in Florence two days, be sure to visit, so much so that trains in Italy are very convenient to Lucca connections per hour

  • Excellent church with a very pretty interior. A must see when in lucca. Nice to sit with a gelato on the front steps and watch the locals and tour groups go by.... but the best thing for me was the pizza place behind the church .. 9/10
  • Beautiful cathedral from white shiny marble. Consider that each column is different in front side. Decoration is not rich inside, entrance is free there.
  • A small beautiful church in town. Love the panel painting.
  • Fantastic on the outside, on the inside there is not much to see because there wasn't enough money to decorate the church on the inside.
  • Amazing little church just inside the walls of Lucca. The square was not crowded at all when I was there with plenty of opportunities to take photos. The interior was very dark but there was some interesting artwork. Great place to stop on a tour of the city.
