San Michele in Foro, Lucca
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
When in Tuscany, don't miss the chance to admire the historical sights of Lucca, of which San Michele in Foro is a major highlight. A church has stood on the ancient Roman forum in Lucca since at least the 8th century, but the building of the current structure started about 200 years later and lasted for several centuries. The result is an intriguing combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles, especially visible on the facade adorned with numerous arcades and sculptures. The interior of the basilica is more subtle and offers a perfect setting for enjoying ecclesiastic art. Bear in mind that the basilica is still active, so be respectful of worshippers. For personal opinion is prettier than San Martino Cathedral. The facade studded with these different columns from each other by a sense of grandeur. Trivia: in the first row of colonnata, the last on the far right or the first right is the "famous" column of Solomon's knot. Another special feature are the Windows of the Tower: have been designed according to the Pythagorean tetraktis policy.show original

Die Kirche von außen erstrahlt mehr, wie im inneren zu sehen ist. Ein wenig spartanisch, aber von der Architektur sehr schön.The Church from the outside is more, as shown in the inside. A little Spartan, but very nice architecture.show original
Beautiful cathedral from white shiny marble. Consider that each column is different in front side. Decoration is not rich inside, entrance is free there.
Amazing little church just inside the walls of Lucca. The square was not crowded at all when I was there with plenty of opportunities to take photos. The interior was very dark but there was some interesting artwork. Great place to stop on a tour of the city.
Amazing, much better than the ones in Firenze and Siena.
Nice 'little' church!
It was nice place to stay while the thunder storm passed. It was raining so hard that it was swirling out side so this was the closest place to go. Inside there was plenty of seating available and the church itself was beautiful. Plenty of classical original paintings and great stained glass windows. As a person who doesn't go to church regularly, I enjoyed my experience inside the holy building.
