San Michele in Foro, Lucca
(4.4/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
When in Tuscany, don't miss the chance to admire the historical sights of Lucca, of which San Michele in Foro is a major highlight. A church has stood on the ancient Roman forum in Lucca since at least the 8th century, but the building of the current structure started about 200 years later and lasted for several centuries. The result is an intriguing combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles, especially visible on the facade adorned with numerous arcades and sculptures. The interior of the basilica is more subtle and offers a perfect setting for enjoying ecclesiastic art. Bear in mind that the basilica is still active, so be respectful of worshippers. • We went after 15.00 (opening) admission is free. Honestly from the outside hitting really hard, the Interior is a little bare, however it is worth getting in and get a tour.

  • Among the most beautiful churches in Italy, not only of Lucca, there is this! they have a pretty mean the Pisans, or fiorentini...ma this sitli between the two towns and (then) rivals, this is definitely the most beautiful. Because beyond the exceptional architectural aspect, is a ST. MICHAEL, that is associated with Saint Michael, Saint Michel in France, and the Sacra di San Michele North of Turin. That's why you can't miss this ... When you're in the other three (like me) will naturally visit this to ... you know ... do the deck.

  • In the heart of Lucca's historic centre, a beautiful square with, on a mezzanine, the beautiful church between Romanesque and Gothic San Michele in Foro. The façade is adorned by a statue of San Michele. This is definitely a must to do in the tour of this beautiful city.

  • Excellent church with a very pretty interior. A must see when in lucca. Nice to sit with a gelato on the front steps and watch the locals and tour groups go by.... but the best thing for me was the pizza place behind the church .. 9/10
  • Beautiful cathedral from white shiny marble. Consider that each column is different in front side. Decoration is not rich inside, entrance is free there.
  • A small beautiful church in town. Love the panel painting.
  • Fantastic on the outside, on the inside there is not much to see because there wasn't enough money to decorate the church on the inside.
  • Amazing little church just inside the walls of Lucca. The square was not crowded at all when I was there with plenty of opportunities to take photos. The interior was very dark but there was some interesting artwork. Great place to stop on a tour of the city.
