Piazza Anfiteatro, Lucca

Landmark Tourist Spot
Located in the historic heart of the city, Piazza Anfiteatro was constructed over an ancient Roman amphitheater. The onetime amphitheater, built as a vast entertainment complex just outside the Roman town, became a centrally located plaza during the medieval period. Today, the oval-shaped square is lined with houses, cafes, and restaurants. The square’s central sections were used for vegetable patches until the 19th century, when a local architect named Lorenzo Nottolini redesigned the space, demolishing some of the old structures and creating a new public area over the ancient foundations. Parts of the original amphitheater still rest below the paved surface, with a few ancient remains visible in the buildings enclosing the square. • Beautiful little renaissance city filled with equally lovely art! This piazza is in the old town center . A very rewarding and romantic place to exsplore!  more »
  • Not the most interesting aspect of Lucca. Mostly a collection of junky souvenir shops. Other aspects of city more interesting. Though always good to see the piazzas.  more »
  • Lovely place to feel in real Italy. Nice for lunch listening to some entertainers...just a beautiful ancient piazza.  more »

  • Fantastic location, beautiful apartment. Couple of niggles like crap wi-fi and a dripping tap but a really lovely place to stay.
  • Great place in center of Lucca, this has one drawback street noice, good breakfast nice staff
  • Francesco, Hotel Manager, and his staff are very friendly. That makes you feel at home. The room is big and clean. Bathroom, too. BTW nice shower. Breakfast great and enough. The location is in the middle of the town. It was possible to leave the luggage until evening.
  • Beautiful bed and breakfast, nice and clean. Overlooking the square where you see the Romanesque church of San Frediano. Only minus the mini bar is empty.
