Piazza Anfiteatro, Lucca
(4.4/5 based on 2,800+ reviews on the web)
Located in the historic heart of the city, Piazza Anfiteatro was constructed over an ancient Roman amphitheater. The onetime amphitheater, built as a vast entertainment complex just outside the Roman town, became a centrally located plaza during the medieval period. Today, the oval-shaped square is lined with houses, cafes, and restaurants. The square’s central sections were used for vegetable patches until the 19th century, when a local architect named Lorenzo Nottolini redesigned the space, demolishing some of the old structures and creating a new public area over the ancient foundations. Parts of the original amphitheater still rest below the paved surface, with a few ancient remains visible in the buildings enclosing the square. • For me is the essence of Italy. La piazzetta is impressive. Colours, atmosphere, smells, shape ... hard to express with words. Recommend you go there in the morning. The premises are closed and you are unable to appreciate the beauty of the amphitheatre

  • One of the most beautiful places in Lucca: a true jewel from Roman times. As you stand inside the oval square, you can clearly see the buildings were built around the original elliptical structure typical of Roman amphitheatres long ago. While the amphitheater no longer exists, the square has maintained its particular shape and takes us back in time to when the Roman colony sat here. Many local restaurants and shops look onto the square where, especially during Summer, events and concerts usually take place.
  • Take your time to find the place that suits you, don't feel pressed by the greeters. A nice relaxing place to have a meal and a wine
  • Very nice place, one can imagine how cruel was the life here fighting for your life in the arena. Now everything is peaceful, a nice place to have something to eat or just drink a coffee in one of the places.
  • Excellent spot in the heart of the city. Contained within the attractive surroundings of the old amphitheatre, there are a number of pleasant places to eat and drink. A lovely atmosphere when the sun is out and people are milling around.
  • The most scenographic square of Lucca. A bit touristy, but well worthy a visit.
