Basilica of San Frediano, Lucca
(4.4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Stop into Basilica of San Frediano, known for its enormous golden 13th-century mosaic of Christ's ascension, designed by Berlinghiero Berlinghier in a Byzantine style. The inside of the cathedral is carved entirely of white marble, and houses Roman capitals repurposed from the Roman amphitheater nearby. The focal point, though, is the enormous 12th-century baptismal font, the Fonte Lustrale, decorated with biblical scenes by medieval Lombardi sculptors. Outside, you can enjoy dinner at one of the cafes along with views of the cathedral's glittering facade. • First mentioned in a document from 685 as Basilica Longobardorum was founded according to tradition by Bishop St Frediano. During the period when the original church was built in the 6th century, when it was still named after Saint Vincent, it was outside the city walls. Of great artistic value is the mosaic of late 13th century Romanesque façade, rare in place, depicting Christ the Redeemer who ascends into heaven. The style of the work is Byzantine and refers to the school of Lucca Berlinghieri. The Interior of the Church is divided into two aisles on the sides of which there are many noble chapels, built between the 14TH and 16th centuries. They contain several works including sculptures and statues afreschi attributable to major artists such as Jacopo della Quercia, Matteo Civitali and Amico Aspertini. Worthy of mention is the splendid 12th-century baptismal font to the right of the entrance.

  • Nice mosaic.
  • Nice!
  • Bella basilica
  • I found unpleasant having to pay three euros per person to get in. In addition to visit the Church where you come to pray. It doesn't seem right to pay to say a prayer. Also of despicable taste the gift shop inside the Church, before the exit. Let us remember that the churches are places of worship.
