Santuario Madonna di Montenero, Livorno

(4.4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
According to legend, the origin of Santuario Madonna di Montenero as a place of worship dates back to 1345, when an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd and led him to this hill. Now the church overlooks the city from this perch, offering views of the city and the sea beyond. Take the funicular to get there, or hike up from Riomaggiore. Inside the church, explore the wings where votive offerings have been left to the Madonna. Behind the church, many caves have been dug into the hillside: once perhaps a refuge for robbers, they also served as shelters during World War II. It is possible to tour these as well. • It comes after a narrow winding road, the entrance doesn't seem to a sanctuary, inside a spectacular collection of ex-votos ranging from 800 to the present day. Bella the effigy of the Madonna in the Church.

  • As with all school leavers this place is a real ritual for those who plan to graduate, as they too have been there and offers a breathtaking view of the entire coast

  • Sanctuary really impressive. Outside the city centre, to reach it serves the bus and funicular. Huge collection of votive offerings. Beautiful altar with the painting of our Lady of Montenero. ESPECIALLY THE CORRIDOR WITH THE COATS OF ARMS OF CITIES AND TOWN IN TUSCANY. Just joined, in plain sight, I could see just what the country of my heart (!!!): Rio nell'Elba.

  • Great location, on a hill overlooking the Livorno coast overlooking the sea and the surrounding landscape. Within large exhibition of votive offerings, religious goods store overlooking the cloister (too bad not accessible to the public). The square in front of souvenir shops and public places to drink after the visit.

  • Our Lady of Montenero sanctuary patroness of Tuscany, on a hill behind Livorno accessible by road and parking about three hundred meters, or by cable car from Piazza delle Carrozze (from the city to get there by bus # 2).

  • The sanctuary of Montenero is an expensive place to Livorno. The Madonna depicted in the little picture on the central altar is said to have miraculous powers. The Church is not particularly beautiful, but interesting is the Gallery of votive offerings testifying as the livornesi faithful have received thanks salla Madonna.
